Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)

Post by emmea90 »

Contest #6 - Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)
A small contest before Giro d'Italia that will focus mainly on Tour de Romandie. Not on the race itself but as preparation for Giro d'Italia.

Tour de Romandie declares bankrupt. You have to draw a new race - of six days, World Tour - that took Tour de Romandie spot - as a preparation race for Giro d'Italia.

Requirements:
- Technical difficulties should be the same of Romandie (not 2018 edition in particular and this does not mean you have to provide exactly the same type of stages in details, for example the CTT)
- You can't draw it in Switzerland
- You can't draw it in Italy, Spain or France - the three Grand Tours country
- You have to focus the race on a region/particular area, limiting transfers
- You can track it where you want but Europe is preferable due to transfers after Liege

Deadline: 26 may 2018, h 23.59

Here is my route for the Giro Preparation Race:

maps/tours/view/9093

After the disappearance of Tour de Romandie, the opportunity for Portugal to have a World Tour race. Then, the Tour of North Portugal became a reality, turning into the most important cycling race of this Iberian country.

The Tour of North Portugal is a medium mountain race. It travels through the surroundings and the Metropolitan city of Porto, the last kilometres of the Douro River, one of the most important rivers in the Iberian Peninsula, and walks through the Atlantic coast of North Portugal until the border with Spain. The environment of this area is green, plenty of forests and hills, and it is an optimum scenario for a high level cycling competition.

Although the mountains are not very high in altitude, the region has a large amount of climbs, some of which are really hard and unknown. Also, the hills near Porto are usually key to unreveal the name of the winner of the GC.
Spoiler!
Prologue Matosinhos - Matosinhos

First prologue ITT, as usual in this type of stage races. A very fast, flat ITT will surround the Park of the City of Porto, located in the near city of Matosinhos, famous touristical destiny. The coast of the Atlantic Ocean will also be an spectator of the start of this race.

Image

Stage 1 Póvoa de Varzim - Valença do Minho

First line stage is short and with an unclear finish. The features of the stage could mean a massive sprint, a sprint of a reduced group, a solo attacker...
The route goes to the North, following the Atlantic coast in the first part of the stage and to the northeast in the final part, following the Miño river which suppose the border between Portugal and Spain.
The first part of the race is flat, with small hills spoilt in the route. After a short climb of 3rd category, now following the Miño river an going out of the coast, a first pass by the finish line will mark the start of the main difficulty of the journey: the 2nd category climb of Monte Faro. The summit is reached at 15 km to the end, and the descent finishes just 10 km before the finish line, so an attack in the climb could be enough for taking the stage, or maybe the group could manage to get to the finish, as this is going to be the main opportunity for sprinters.

Image

Stage 2 Vila Nova de Cerveira - Guimaraes (Monte da Penha)

A very hard stage of this Tour. 8 climbs in a route in which the chain of them will select the race until the final climb to Monte da Penha.

The first part of the stage features two 2nd category climbs, in which a large breakaway could be formed. After it, the longest mountain of the journey, followed by a short steep 3rd category one, and a flat part until the town of Braga. After it, new climbs are chained, producing maybe a selection in the race. The final climb, of 6 km at 6% is not specially hard, but after the hard stage will make the climb harder.

Image

Stage 3 Braga - Castelo de Paiva

The queen stage of the race. The length and the toughness of the route will make gaps between the GC riders, specially the 1st category climb, just 17 km to the finish.

The route goes from North Portugal to the Douro river, which it surrounds and crosses. The race goes into the inland but after crossing the river takes again the way to the coast. The race is spoilt with medium distance climbs, and the final part is the most important, with the 1st category climb and an almost-uphill finish with a short climb up to 2 km to the finish line. The descent will also be relevant for the development of the stage.

Image

Stage 4 Vila Nova de Gaia - Vila Nova de Gaia

A very hard and decisive time trial through the streets of Vila Nova de Gaia. This town is the south margin of Douro river in its pass through Porto, being the city the north margin. This town, which has in fact more population than its capital city. Vila Nova de Gaia is famous because it hosts the factories of Port wine, a worldwide famous variant of wine. This wine was specially valued by British merchants and navigators, and so on many factories belong to British families.

The time trial is really hard, with short and very steep climbs, some of which are in the cobblestones roads between wine factories. Also, the route in his first part goes by the side of the great Douro river, in front of which the city of Porto can be observed in a beautiful landscape.

In summary, a time trial for strong riders, whose climbs will make gaps for sure, speccially for explosive riders with good performance in short and steep climbs.

Image

Stage 5 Vila Nova de Gaia - Porto

The final stage of this race means a summary of what has been the tour and a beautiful and interesting finish for the route. In addition to the fight for the stage win, in a perfect scenario for attackers and classic specialists, the GC could not be sentenced, and this stage can make really big differences because of the constantly hilly environment.

The route features the main scenarios of this North Portugal Tour: the Atlantic Ocean in the start of the race, the wine factories of Vila Nova de Gaia, main characters of the time trial, the Douro river, spectator of the main mountain stage of the route, and the city of Porto and its surroundings, main host of the race.

The stage has a Liège-type shape: a route spoilt with short climbs, but with some of them really steep and without a meter of flat territory. The constant chain of this kind of ascents will make the race very hard and a very reduced group will fight for the win in the Aliados square, in the core of the city of Porto.

Hi, to replace the Tour of Romandie I decided to draw a tour in the Istra region, which is divided between Croatia, Slovenia and Italy which has a very hilly territory where several type of stages can be drawn.
And considering that is very close to Italy I think that can be a very interesting option to avoid long travels for the riders.

this is my giro preparation tour: the tour of Bayern.

stage 1 is a small ITT near coburg, should make some differences.
stage 2 can be a reduced bunch sprint or a breakaway stage, with a lot of small climbs.
stage 3 can make differences between GC contenders with his 3500 and over d+. No flat here.
stage 4 suits sprinters.
stage 5 ends in an altiplan after a short climb. Puncheurs or resistent sprinters are the favourites.
stage 6 is an high mountain stage with 3 very steep climbs (8-9% average), with the end in a sky station only 1km after the summit of the last climb, 6km with 8.3% average. Who wins here have a big chance to win GC.

I created a Tour of Austria as prep race for the Giro. This race begins in East, in Graz and ends in Alps, on the West, to Brand.
There will be :
- 2 individual time trial (1st and 6th stage)
- 3 mountain stages
- 1 flat stage (but for punchers)
- 1 low mountain (but sprinters can win) stage

STAGE 1 : Graz - Graz (ITT)
First stage in the streets of Graz for a individual time trail rather flat in spite of a small bump over the end.

STAGE 2 : Leoben - Wien (Low mountain)
This stage begins in the extreme East of the Alps and ends in the capital of Austria in Vienna. She is classified on average mountain but the sprinters will widely have a chance.

STAGE 3 : Melk - Salzburg (Flat)
It's the longest stage of this race. In the North of Austria, she is at first flat but the final is very hilly. There will be the first one arrived in height with the ascent of the Park of Salzburg (1,6 km at 10,1 %)

STAGE 4 : Salzburg - Glossglockner (Mountain)
First mountain stage in the Austrian Alps, with only two ascents but both classified HC, at first Statzerhaus (16,7 km at 7,8%) then arrival to Glossglockner (17 km at 8,8%), peak of this Tour of Austria (2693m)

STAGE 5 : Mittersil - Innsbruck (Mountain)
Other stage with only three passes to be crossed, the first one at the beginning of the stage, the long flat passage before the chain of Tulfes then terrible Nockofwegpass (12,5 km at 7,5% with a passage in 22%) before coming down on Innsbruck

STAGE 6 : Langefeld - Solden (ITT)
Last individual time trial. Who begins to Langefeld in the valley, intermediary in the center of Sölden then long ascent of Hochsolden (passage in 27 %)

STAGE 7 : Imst - Brand (Mountain)
Last stage, we shall see the winner of the race. Once again, only 3 passes but harder. The chain Arlberg - Sonnenkopf then the ultimate ascent of this Tour of Austria, the Brand station before the final arrival in Brand's center.

I hope that this route will please you. Good luck

This is my Giro preparation race, the Tiroler Rundtfahrt: maps/tours/view/9188

This stage race starts and finishes in Innsbruck. The cyclist will mostly ride through the beautiful valley of the Inn river. But alongside this valley there are a lot of difficult mountains to climb.

This race contains
[*] 1 flat stage
[*] 1 medium mountain stage
[*] 3 high mountain stages (with 2 mountain top finishes)
[*] 1 individual time trial

The stages are not very long. The longest one is 170,5 km and the shortest 97,5 km (the TT of 18 km excluded).

Austria will be delighted to host a WT race!

Hi ! There are my two (first) routes for this contest. The first one is Tour du Péloponnèse, in southern Greece, a very mountainous region which is surrounded by wind. The second one is Tour des Sudètes, a mountain chain extended on several countries : Germany, Poland and Czech Republic. These three ones are hosting the route.

Tour du Péloponnèse : maps/tours/view/9122

It contains :
- 1 time trial stage
- 1 flat stage
- 3 medium mountain stages
- 1 mountain stage
- 892 kilometers

There are 8 cities and sites which host at least on a stage, and 27 KOM sprints. Things can change everyday, even in the long flat stage until Corinth, because of the wind which is omnipresent in the peninsula. Moreover, there is a very hot area : it is often to have 30 degrees in the end of April.

1. Patras -> Patras. 9.3km. ITT. :mrgreen:
It is longer than a prologue, and by the way more difficult. After the start on the seaside, the route goes to a hill in the habitations of the city before a quick downhill to the finish, in the core of the Peloponnesus capital.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 677-e1.png

2. Patras -> Olympie. 146.8km. Hilly. 8-)
The riders will go South to the Antic city of Olympia in a hilly stage with a 23 kilometers circuit to finish. In addition to the climbs, another difficulty should interfere : the wind.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 680-e2.png

3. Pyrgos -> Corinthe. 226km. Flat. :63:
I cannot draw a flatter stage, but I found it interesting to have a long stage without great difficulty to improve the possibility to have echelons and a tactical race due the wind. It is also the only occasion for sprinters to take the win before the Giro.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 695-e3.png

4. Corinthe -> Argos. 171.5km. Hilly. |rules
Without being very long, this stage is quite dense and offers a good field to attack. Before the final climb in Argos, there are 5 climbs including Aria's one which is to climb twice. The first kilometer of the finish's climb offers a 10% slope.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 693-e4.png

5. Nauplie -> Ziria Ski Center - Mont Cyllène. 207.5km. Mountain. :ahahah:
This is the major stage of this tour, with a summit finish in the only ski station of the Peloponnesus. The final climb has regular slopes and is very long, promises to make the riders attack and some gaps.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 714-e5.png

6. Lac de Stymfalia -> Kalavrita. 130.5km. Hilly. :asd:
The first part of this short final stage is made of three 2nd category climbs before a circuit around Kalavrita. There are some minor climbs then which could allow the riders to grow final gaps. Some puncheurs or even sprinters who know how to climb could maybe have an importance in this stage.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 714-e6.png

Tour des Sudètes : maps/tours/view/9233

It contains :
- 1 prologue
- 2 flat stages
- 2 hilly stages
- 1 mountain stage
- 917 kilometers.

From Dresden to Prague, there are 8 cities which host at least one stage, 29 KOM sprints and many occasions for climbers and puncheurs : that constitute a good preparation for the Giro. Central Europe is not far away from Liege and from Italy, this is why it is a good place to prepare the first Grand Tour of the season.

Prologue. Dresde. 4.5km. zizi
This is a really short prologue, with long right lines and three technical curves. In a city rebuilt after WW2, a real and strong specialist should take the first leader jersey.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 901-e1.png

1. Dresde -> Liberec. 177.3km. Hilly. :lol:
The 40 first kilometers are in Germany before enter the Czech Republic, with an arrive in the city of Liberec. The major part of the stage is quite flat and easy, but the 35 last kilometers, with two climbs, should help the baroudeurs and others attackers to take the win.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 911-e2.png

2. Liberec -> Trutnov. 173.5km. Flat. :roll:
Even if the first part of the stage should be difficult for non climbers, the 100 last kilometers won't prevent the sprinters to go for the win in Trutnov, after a 24 kilometer-circuit around the city. The finish is set in a minor climb. This is a stage for someone like Peter Sagan or Edvald Boasson Hagen.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 910-e3.png

3. Trutnov -> Karpacz - Sniejka Mountain. 150km. Mountain. :stupore: :stupore:
This is the major stage of the route, between Czech Republic and Poland, with a short distance, but with a very hard climb to finish. Indeed, Sniejka is the most elevate summit of the Sudetes chain, the finish is set just below it. The route is made of cobbles for the 7.5 last kilometers, with hard slopes, until 14% for the biggest.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 906-e4.png

4. Jelenia Góra -> Nowa Ruda. 203.5km. Hilly. :P
This stage is quite long, and offers many possibilities to attack and make gaps in the GC. Before going to Nowa Ruda, the riders have to go through a 47km-circuit with 2 climbs : Jugów and Wolibor. Jugów climb has to be climbed a third time before the finish.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 908-e5.png

5. Náchod -> Prague. 208.9km. Flat. :angel:
Of course, Prague is not in the Sudetes chain, but not far away from it, and the beauty of the city convinced me to set the final arrive line here, even if it is difficult to draw with the tramway lanes. The riders have to cross them once, in a perpendicular way, so there should not generate any problem. The route before Prague is quite easy and flat until three minor climbs in the final. Another strong sprinter should win because of the last right line which is a false flat.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 908-e6.png

This is all for me, I hope you will enjoy these two routes ! If I find another idea, I'll send it to you ! (like in Schwarzwald or Tirol...) ;)

my second attempt, tour of wales.

stage 1 is an ITT of 16km. some difference can be made here.
stage 2 can be a sprint but also a breakaway stage. medium difficulty
stage 3 has a lot of small climbs, the last one, with an average gradient of 8%, ends only 3km from the finish. GC battle starts here.
stage 4 is the queen stage with an uphill finsih in Cowlyd, Snowdonia.
stage 5 ia also very difficult. an easy start anticipate a very hard finish, with 3 passages on the very hard Climb of Trefor (2.5km, 12.5% avg).
stage 6 is the final sprint in Swansea, but a lot of small climbs and no real flat can help brave escapers.

in general is an hard tour, with no high altidudes but with a lot of steep climbs where difference can be made.

TOUR OF GREECE - GIRO PREPARATION RACE 02

The decision of the Tour the Romandie to finish its history meant a historical opportunity for some countries to host finally a WT category stage race. Eventually, the Tour the Greece won this possibility and started to plan their first ever WT race, a six-days stage race in the last days of April. The proximity to Italy, allowing transfers to the next Giro d'Italia; their placement in Europe, allowing also transfers from the Ardennes classics, the good climate situation (specially in that time of the year, and the favourable geography and relief of the Hellenic country were more than enough reasons to give Greece the opportunity to host this race.

The race is centered in the city of Athens. The prologue is placed in the Piraeus (Athens maritime port) and the stages go to regions and areas near to the main city (Corinth and the Attica region) exploring the mountainous relief of the country and the ruins of Ancient Greece cities, temples and culture. The Tour of Greece is a medium mountain race, built for classicmen and attackers, in which each stage has its own difficulty, with nervous stage, contant ups and downs and few flat moments.
Spoiler!
Prologue Piraeus - Piraeus

The prologue of this Athens-centered Tour of Greece is a typical prologue ITT. This time, it goes through the streets of Piraeus, the famous Athens maritime port. It has been absorbed by the city of Athens, so the stage will be in urban roads, practically all the time next to the sea. So, the length of only 6 km, the flatness and the good roads will promise fast times and the favourite will be a TT specialist.

Stage 1 Elefsis - Corinth

Nervous stage between the two historical towns of Elefsis and Corinth. The route moves away from the Metropolitan City of Athens and goes into a much rural area, crossing the Corinth Isthmus and doing the final part of the stage in the Peloponessus peninsula.

The stage has three differentiated parts: the starting climb, very smooth but optimum for the formation of the breakaway; the second part, mainly flat and next to the sea, where the breakaway will manage its advantage; and the second half of the stage, with constant ups and downs and the passage of six punctuable climbs: four of them are 3rd category and two of them 2nd category. The chain of the four first climbs could make some brave rider to try an early attack, although the best place to do it is the 2nd category climb of Ag. Ioannis (5.5 km at 7.6%, with maximum slopes of 9.6%), with its summit at 40 km to the finish line. After it, a much easier 3rd category climb at 20 km to the end could mean a final definition of the race situation. The last 20 km are completely favourable, downwards but not in a technical descent.

A stage very favourable for a breakaway or a classic/hilly specialist, or maybe for a fast rider able to overcome the climbs and win the sprint of a reduced group.

Stage 2 Corinth - Livadia

A second nervous and complete stage in the geography of Central Greece. In this case, the route goes from Corinth to the town of Livadia, leaving the Peloponnessus peninsula and entering central Greece again. The stage has some things in common with the previous one: a starting climb in the first km of the race, a central flat part and a hilly second part, whose final 20 km are mainly descent. Also the length is similar (around 190 km).

Although this, there are some main differences, which make this stage harder than the previous one. At first, the first climb is harder in this stage, a 2nd category, 16 km climb. Although the slopes are smooth, the length will make a strong breakaway. After this, the flat part is very short and three climbs are chained, in which the first one is clarly hard: 4.5 km at 9.33 %, and two 3rd category that come just after its summit is reached. After this three climbs, the flattest area of the stage comes, into the mid-stage. After it, five climbs are chained, in which the most relevant is the third one, the first 1st category climb, with 12 km at 5%. Although the slopes are not very hard, the length and the fatigue will make their work, selecting the race, and leaving the two following climbs for the final selection. After a long, steep and technical descent, the final kilometre of the stage is also very hard, with a muro in the streets of Livadia with slopes around 10%, which will make -at least slight- differences for sure.

Stage 3 Livadia - Mount Parnassus

Finally, the queen stage of this Tour of Greece comes out. The stage is almost entirely dedicated to the Mount Parnassus, which will be climbed from two different sides, the first time only partially and the second time until the summit of the road. The first part of the stage is not flat, but with smooth slopes up and down, until the intermediate sprint of Itea, next to the sea, where it's expected for a breakaway to be formed. After this place the road starts to get harder, meaning the start of the first ascent. This first ascent is very long and smooth, with some rest zones where the road goes downwards. In the middle of the climb the riders will pass next to the famous Oracle of Delphos, where, in ancient Greece, the Temple of Apolo was placed. After it, the climb will continue, with smooth slopes and maximum of 8.6%. After the partial summit, the road starts a descent and a short flat fragment until the town of Amfiklia, where the final ascent starts. The final climb is shorter than the first, but much harder. Although it, the length of almost 25 km is impressive, and the average slope of 6% quite respectable. The hardest area of the climb is the middle one, with smooth first km and last 7 km, and the middle part with slopes of 8, 9 and even 10%, which will make the most important gaps between the favourite riders to win the GC.

Stage 4 Delphi - Athens

This final line stage is a rest for the GC contenders and the best opportunity for sprinters in this Tour of Greece. The route is mainly flat, and mountainous difficulties are placed far from the finish and are not very hard. The race starts just in front of the Delphos oracle. The majestuosity of the Greek ruins will approve the start of the route, with the hardest climb of the journey just in the start. This climb will wake up the riders and maybe form a strong breakaway. After it, a smooth 3rd category climb and a long flat territory of more than 40 km, until the riders reach the city of Tebas. Here, the race becomes more nervous, with a continous upwards road. This area reaches its summit at the 3rd category climb 40 km to the finish, followed by a long descent entering the Metropolitan city of Athens, passing through different cities and towns around the capital city. Finally, when the riders reach the city of Athens, a short climb of a hill in center Athens, whose summit is placed just 4.5 km to the finish line, will be favourable for an attacker or puncher having enough time to win the stage. Also, if the GC is very tight, there could be movements for the GC in this final ascent. But the GC contenders are probably going to preparate for the next day TT, and this stage seems favourable for classicmen, atackers or a well-climbing sprinter.

Stage 5 Athens - Athens

To finish this Tour, a short but difficult ITT, with the climb of Mount Lycabettus in the first km of the TT and the narrow roads of Athens city center. The route surrounds the historical places of Athens such as the Acropoli, the Parthenon, ancient Greek temples, the Hill of the Muses, and other ancient monuments. The ITT starts and ends in the Syntagma Square, known as the main square of the city and where the headquarters of the Greek government are placed.

stage 1 is a circuit near the city of Umag, with three laps of a flat terrain. it will be a sprint in Umag.
stage 2 changes drastically from the first one. Some small but very steep climbs, anticipate the final climb into the historical city of Monton.
stage 3 ia again a sprint stage, the last one. In pola can be the revenge from who lost in stage 1.
stage 4 is dramatically decisive. 27km of ITT in the villages near Pola can change the gc.
stage 5 is the queen stage with the long climb of Ucka. The end is at the end of the 21km climb.
stage 6 is the last chance to change GC with three laps of a circuit around Rijeka that conteins 2 climbs. 100km of stage, expected a lot of attacks and moves.
