Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)
Contest #6 - Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)
A small contest before Giro d'Italia that will focus mainly on Tour de Romandie. Not on the race itself but as preparation for Giro d'Italia.
Tour de Romandie declares bankrupt. You have to draw a new race - of six days, World Tour - that took Tour de Romandie spot - as a preparation race for Giro d'Italia.
Requirements:
- Technical difficulties should be the same of Romandie (not 2018 edition in particular and this does not mean you have to provide exactly the same type of stages in details, for example the CTT)
- You can't draw it in Switzerland
- You can't draw it in Italy, Spain or France - the three Grand Tours country
- You have to focus the race on a region/particular area, limiting transfers
- You can track it where you want but Europe is preferable due to transfers after Liege
Deadline: 26 may 2018, h 23.59

Re: Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)

Re: Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)
Here is my route for the Giro Preparation Race:
maps/tours/view/9093
After the disappearance of Tour de Romandie, the opportunity for Portugal to have a World Tour race. Then, the Tour of North Portugal became a reality, turning into the most important cycling race of this Iberian country.
The Tour of North Portugal is a medium mountain race. It travels through the surroundings and the Metropolitan city of Porto, the last kilometres of the Douro River, one of the most important rivers in the Iberian Peninsula, and walks through the Atlantic coast of North Portugal until the border with Spain. The environment of this area is green, plenty of forests and hills, and it is an optimum scenario for a high level cycling competition.
Although the mountains are not very high in altitude, the region has a large amount of climbs, some of which are really hard and unknown. Also, the hills near Porto are usually key to unreveal the name of the winner of the GC.

Re: Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)
Hi, to replace the Tour of Romandie I decided to draw a tour in the Istra region, which is divided between Croatia, Slovenia and Italy which has a very hilly territory where several type of stages can be drawn.
And considering that is very close to Italy I think that can be a very interesting option to avoid long travels for the riders.

Re: Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)
maps/tours/view/9208
this is my giro preparation tour: the tour of Bayern.
stage 1 is a small ITT near coburg, should make some differences.
stage 2 can be a reduced bunch sprint or a breakaway stage, with a lot of small climbs.
stage 3 can make differences between GC contenders with his 3500 and over d+. No flat here.
stage 4 suits sprinters.
stage 5 ends in an altiplan after a short climb. Puncheurs or resistent sprinters are the favourites.
stage 6 is an high mountain stage with 3 very steep climbs (8-9% average), with the end in a sky station only 1km after the summit of the last climb, 6km with 8.3% average. Who wins here have a big chance to win GC.

Re: Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)
maps/tours/view/9177
I created a Tour of Austria as prep race for the Giro. This race begins in East, in Graz and ends in Alps, on the West, to Brand.
There will be :
- 2 individual time trial (1st and 6th stage)
- 3 mountain stages
- 1 flat stage (but for punchers)
- 1 low mountain (but sprinters can win) stage
STAGE 1 : Graz - Graz (ITT)
First stage in the streets of Graz for a individual time trail rather flat in spite of a small bump over the end.
STAGE 2 : Leoben - Wien (Low mountain)
This stage begins in the extreme East of the Alps and ends in the capital of Austria in Vienna. She is classified on average mountain but the sprinters will widely have a chance.
STAGE 3 : Melk - Salzburg (Flat)
It's the longest stage of this race. In the North of Austria, she is at first flat but the final is very hilly. There will be the first one arrived in height with the ascent of the Park of Salzburg (1,6 km at 10,1 %)
STAGE 4 : Salzburg - Glossglockner (Mountain)
First mountain stage in the Austrian Alps, with only two ascents but both classified HC, at first Statzerhaus (16,7 km at 7,8%) then arrival to Glossglockner (17 km at 8,8%), peak of this Tour of Austria (2693m)
STAGE 5 : Mittersil - Innsbruck (Mountain)
Other stage with only three passes to be crossed, the first one at the beginning of the stage, the long flat passage before the chain of Tulfes then terrible Nockofwegpass (12,5 km at 7,5% with a passage in 22%) before coming down on Innsbruck
STAGE 6 : Langefeld - Solden (ITT)
Last individual time trial. Who begins to Langefeld in the valley, intermediary in the center of Sölden then long ascent of Hochsolden (passage in 27 %)
STAGE 7 : Imst - Brand (Mountain)
Last stage, we shall see the winner of the race. Once again, only 3 passes but harder.The chain Arlberg - Sonnenkopf then the ultimate ascent of this Tour of Austria, the Brand station before the final arrival in Brand's center.
I hope that this route will please you. Good luck

This is my Giro preparation race, the Tiroler Rundtfahrt: maps/tours/view/9188
This stage race starts and finishes in Innsbruck. The cyclist will mostly ride through the beautiful valley of the Inn river. But alongside this valley there are a lot of difficult mountains to climb.
This race contains
[*] 1 flat stage
[*] 1 medium mountain stage
[*] 3 high mountain stages (with 2 mountain top finishes)
[*] 1 individual time trial
The stages are not very long. The longest one is 170,5 km and the shortest 97,5 km (the TT of 18 km excluded).
Austria will be delighted to host a WT race!

Re: Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)
Hi ! There are my two (first) routes for this contest. The first one is Tour du Péloponnèse, in southern Greece, a very mountainous region which is surrounded by wind. The second one is Tour des Sudètes, a mountain chain extended on several countries : Germany, Poland and Czech Republic. These three ones are hosting the route.
Tour du Péloponnèse : maps/tours/view/9122
It contains :
- 1 time trial stage
- 1 flat stage
- 3 medium mountain stages
- 1 mountain stage
- 892 kilometers
There are 8 cities and sites which host at least on a stage, and 27 KOM sprints. Things can change everyday, even in the long flat stage until Corinth, because of the wind which is omnipresent in the peninsula. Moreover, there is a very hot area : it is often to have 30 degrees in the end of April.
1. Patras -> Patras. 9.3km. ITT.
It is longer than a prologue, and by the way more difficult. After the start on the seaside, the route goes to a hill in the habitations of the city before a quick downhill to the finish, in the core of the Peloponnesus capital.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 677-e1.png
2. Patras -> Olympie. 146.8km. Hilly.
The riders will go South to the Antic city of Olympia in a hilly stage with a 23 kilometers circuit to finish. In addition to the climbs, another difficulty should interfere : the wind.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 680-e2.png
3. Pyrgos -> Corinthe. 226km. Flat.
I cannot draw a flatter stage, but I found it interesting to have a long stage without great difficulty to improve the possibility to have echelons and a tactical race due the wind. It is also the only occasion for sprinters to take the win before the Giro.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 695-e3.png
4. Corinthe -> Argos. 171.5km. Hilly.
Without being very long, this stage is quite dense and offers a good field to attack. Before the final climb in Argos, there are 5 climbs including Aria's one which is to climb twice. The first kilometer of the finish's climb offers a 10% slope.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 693-e4.png
5. Nauplie -> Ziria Ski Center - Mont Cyllène. 207.5km. Mountain.
This is the major stage of this tour, with a summit finish in the only ski station of the Peloponnesus. The final climb has regular slopes and is very long, promises to make the riders attack and some gaps.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 714-e5.png
6. Lac de Stymfalia -> Kalavrita. 130.5km. Hilly.
The first part of this short final stage is made of three 2nd category climbs before a circuit around Kalavrita. There are some minor climbs then which could allow the riders to grow final gaps. Some puncheurs or even sprinters who know how to climb could maybe have an importance in this stage.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 714-e6.png
Tour des Sudètes : maps/tours/view/9233
It contains :
- 1 prologue
- 2 flat stages
- 2 hilly stages
- 1 mountain stage
- 917 kilometers.
From Dresden to Prague, there are 8 cities which host at least one stage, 29 KOM sprints and many occasions for climbers and puncheurs : that constitute a good preparation for the Giro. Central Europe is not far away from Liege and from Italy, this is why it is a good place to prepare the first Grand Tour of the season.
Prologue. Dresde. 4.5km.
This is a really short prologue, with long right lines and three technical curves. In a city rebuilt after WW2, a real and strong specialist should take the first leader jersey.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 901-e1.png
1. Dresde -> Liberec. 177.3km. Hilly.
The 40 first kilometers are in Germany before enter the Czech Republic, with an arrive in the city of Liberec. The major part of the stage is quite flat and easy, but the 35 last kilometers, with two climbs, should help the baroudeurs and others attackers to take the win.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 911-e2.png
2. Liberec -> Trutnov. 173.5km. Flat.
Even if the first part of the stage should be difficult for non climbers, the 100 last kilometers won't prevent the sprinters to go for the win in Trutnov, after a 24 kilometer-circuit around the city. The finish is set in a minor climb. This is a stage for someone like Peter Sagan or Edvald Boasson Hagen.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 910-e3.png
3. Trutnov -> Karpacz - Sniejka Mountain. 150km. Mountain.
This is the major stage of the route, between Czech Republic and Poland, with a short distance, but with a very hard climb to finish. Indeed, Sniejka is the most elevate summit of the Sudetes chain, the finish is set just below it. The route is made of cobbles for the 7.5 last kilometers, with hard slopes, until 14% for the biggest.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 906-e4.png
4. Jelenia Góra -> Nowa Ruda. 203.5km. Hilly.
This stage is quite long, and offers many possibilities to attack and make gaps in the GC. Before going to Nowa Ruda, the riders have to go through a 47km-circuit with 2 climbs : Jugów and Wolibor. Jugów climb has to be climbed a third time before the finish.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 908-e5.png
5. Náchod -> Prague. 208.9km. Flat.
Of course, Prague is not in the Sudetes chain, but not far away from it, and the beauty of the city convinced me to set the final arrive line here, even if it is difficult to draw with the tramway lanes. The riders have to cross them once, in a perpendicular way, so there should not generate any problem. The route before Prague is quite easy and flat until three minor climbs in the final. Another strong sprinter should win because of the last right line which is a false flat.

This is all for me, I hope you will enjoy these two routes ! If I find another idea, I'll send it to you ! (like in Schwarzwald or Tirol...)

Tour du Péloponnèse : maps/tours/view/9122
It contains :
- 1 time trial stage
- 1 flat stage
- 3 medium mountain stages
- 1 mountain stage
- 892 kilometers
There are 8 cities and sites which host at least on a stage, and 27 KOM sprints. Things can change everyday, even in the long flat stage until Corinth, because of the wind which is omnipresent in the peninsula. Moreover, there is a very hot area : it is often to have 30 degrees in the end of April.
1. Patras -> Patras. 9.3km. ITT.
It is longer than a prologue, and by the way more difficult. After the start on the seaside, the route goes to a hill in the habitations of the city before a quick downhill to the finish, in the core of the Peloponnesus capital.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 677-e1.png
2. Patras -> Olympie. 146.8km. Hilly.
The riders will go South to the Antic city of Olympia in a hilly stage with a 23 kilometers circuit to finish. In addition to the climbs, another difficulty should interfere : the wind.
https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/20 ... 680-e2.png
3. Pyrgos -> Corinthe. 226km. Flat.
695-e3.png
4. Corinthe -> Argos. 171.5km. Hilly.

Re: Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)
maps/tours/view/9250
my second attempt, tour of wales.
stage 1 is an ITT of 16km. some difference can be made here.
stage 2 can be a sprint but also a breakaway stage. medium difficulty
stage 3 has a lot of small climbs, the last one, with an average gradient of 8%, ends only 3km from the finish. GC battle starts here.
stage 4 is the queen stage with an uphill finsih in Cowlyd, Snowdonia.
stage 5 ia also very difficult. an easy start anticipate a very hard finish, with 3 passages on the very hard Climb of Trefor (2.5km, 12.5% avg).
stage 6 is the final sprint in Swansea, but a lot of small climbs and no real flat can help brave escapers.
in general is an hard tour, with no high altidudes but with a lot of steep climbs where difference can be made.

Re: Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)
Here is my second attempt fot the Contest:
TOUR OF GREECE - GIRO PREPARATION RACE 02
maps/tours/view/9239
The decision of the Tour the Romandie to finish its history meant a historical opportunity for some countries to host finally a WT category stage race. Eventually, the Tour the Greece won this possibility and started to plan their first ever WT race, a six-days stage race in the last days of April. The proximity to Italy, allowing transfers to the next Giro d'Italia; their placement in Europe, allowing also transfers from the Ardennes classics, the good climate situation (specially in that time of the year, and the favourable geography and relief of the Hellenic country were more than enough reasons to give Greece the opportunity to host this race.
The race is centered in the city of Athens. The prologue is placed in the Piraeus (Athens maritime port) and the stages go to regions and areas near to the main city (Corinth and the Attica region) exploring the mountainous relief of the country and the ruins of Ancient Greece cities, temples and culture. The Tour of Greece is a medium mountain race, built for classicmen and attackers, in which each stage has its own difficulty, with nervous stage, contant ups and downs and few flat moments.

Re: Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)
maps/tours/view/9270
my third and last attempt, Tour of Istria, Croatia.
stage 1 is a circuit near the city of Umag, with three laps of a flat terrain. it will be a sprint in Umag.
stage 2 changes drastically from the first one. Some small but very steep climbs, anticipate the final climb into the historical city of Monton.
stage 3 ia again a sprint stage, the last one. In pola can be the revenge from who lost in stage 1.
stage 4 is dramatically decisive. 27km of ITT in the villages near Pola can change the gc.
stage 5 is the queen stage with the long climb of Ucka. The end is at the end of the 21km climb.
stage 6 is the last chance to change GC with three laps of a circuit around Rijeka that conteins 2 climbs. 100km of stage, expected a lot of attacks and moves.
