Tour de France preparation races (Cat. 3)
Tour de France preparation races (Cat. 3)
Time for Contest #8, it will be about Tour de France preparation races. That means - of course - mainly Dauphiné and Tour de Suisse. Unfortunately ASO decides to cancel the Dauphiné, so the only preparation race left for us, is Tour de Suisse
Usually Tour de Suisse is softer than Dauphiné, not using all the mountains to attract a different type of riders, leaving Mountain riders the Dauphiné.
We ask you, so, to design a Tour de Suisse harder than the usual edition, in a Dauphiné style.
Tour de Suisse has 9 stages (from saturday to sunday). There should be in these
- At least an individual or team time trial
- At least three high mountain stages
- No more than one stage for pure sprinters (mass peloton sprint, no limits for restricted sprints)
Route should be balanced for climbers than time-triallist men in a proportion of 70% (quintana-type, for example)-30% (dumoulin-type) approximately, but not excluding completely time-triallists from the table.
Deadline will be July 7, h 23.59

Re: Tour de France preparation races (Cat. 3)
My Tour de Suisse / Il mio Tour de Suisse:
maps/tours/view/9226
1. Zurich - Basel (157,6 kms.): First stage with seven categorized climbs. It is ideal for a good fight to conquer the first mountain jersey. The resolution is open, a reduced sprint, an attack in the final part or a long breakaway.
2. Basel - Yverdon-les-Bains (150,9 kms.): Second stage, the only one adapted for pure sprinters. A flat track with only one categorized climb, far away from the finish line.
3. Nyon - Lausanne (37,9 kms.): Third stage, a flat individual time trial race for great specialists. Almost 38 kilometers between Nyon and Lausanne, in the Lake Geneva (or Leman) north shore.
4. Lausanne - Lac d'Emosson (198,8 kms.): Fourth stage and the first one of high mountain, mainly in Romandie (francophone zone in Switzerland). Four categorized climbs, three of them first category, with the final series Forclaz-Lac d'Emosson where the climbers must retrieve time against the chronomen.
5. Martigny - Passo del San Gottardo (167,6 kms.): Fiveth stage, the second one of high mountain. Two great climbs mark this track. Firstly the Nuefenenn Pass or Passo della Novena, the highest climb in this Tour, and then the mythic old road to San Gottardo (also known as Tremola Pass) with more than six kilometers of cobblestones.
6. Cuira/Chur - Sankt Gallen (153,9 kms.): Sixth stage. Short and mid mountain track. The bigs could take a break...or not.
7. Winterthur - Luzern (173,5 kms.): Seventh stage, with a first pass in Luzern and then the Glaubenbergpass followed by a little trap, the climb to Rengg, 20 kms to go.
8. Zug - Grindelwald (223,1 kms.): Eighth and "queen" stage. This Tour de Suisse longest track is the hardest too. Three great mountain passes, Klausenpass, Sustenpass and Grosse Scheidegg will decide this tour fate.
9. Interlaken - Bern (172,3 kms.): Nineth and final stage. After a first pass in Bern, the riders will climb the Gurnigelpass. Then 44 kms to go with uphills, descents and flat, where everything can happen.

Re: Tour de France preparation races (Cat. 3)
My route: maps/tours/view/9787
A very hard edition of Tour de Suisse will be a tough race with 5 Top arrivals, that will connect St Gallen to Sion.
This race will be a battle between GC mens, but climbers will be favourite: in the Tour there will be 4 Mountain stages and 1 Individual Time Trial in the route, also with 2 hill and 2 flat days.
Stage 1 (Hill) - St Gallen > St Gallen
The Tour de Suisse will start with a Grand Depart in St Gallen with 2 circuits to tread.
The first circuit will be 60 flat kilometers in the north of St Gallen. The second circuit will be path 2 times, there will be 55 hill kilometers in the south of the city.
The first arrive of the Tour will be on top of St. Georgen hill, in St Gallen.
Stage 2 (Flat) - St Gallen > Zürich
The second stage will be the longest of the Tour de Suisse (205 Km) and it will be the only opportunity for the sprinters.
The route between St Gallen and Zürich will be easy and totally flat.
Stage 3 (Mountain) - Zürich > Solothurn
The third stage will be the first opportunity for the climbers to animate the race with a total of 6 ascents and 3 First Category GPM in the last 50 kilometers.
From Zürich to Solothurn will be almost 200 km; the climbs will be short but very steep.
Stage 4 (Mountain) - Bienne > Melchsee-Frutt
The fourth day will be that of the first mountain stage with a top finish; 170 kilometers that will bring the group from Bienne to Melchsee-Frutt.
The first 130 kilometers will be very easy, but in the last 40 there will be 2 HC climbs to Ächerlipass (9.5 Km al 10.1%) and to Melchsee-Frutt (9.4 Km al 10.2%).
Stage 5 (Hill) - Brienz > Fribourg
The fifth stage will be a chance for the uphill finisher to achieve a partial success.
The start will be in Brienz, the race will be easy up to Bern; the difficult part of the route will begin from Gurtendörfli hill and other 4 consecutive GPM to precede the arrive in front of St-Nicolas cathedral, in Fribourg, on top on Grandes-Rames hill (0.3 pavé Km al 13.7%).
Stage 6 (Flat) - Fribourg > Lausanne
The sixth stage will be a flat stage with a top finish.
There will be 160 kilometres from Fribourg to Lausanne; the last 5 km will be an easy uphill with the last km to Parc de l'Hermitage at 7.0%.
Stage 7 (ITT) - Nyon > Geneva
The seventh day will be the only individual time trial of the race.
From Nyon to Geneva will be 28 flat kilometers, very suitable for the cronoman along the lac Lema.
Stage 8 (Mountain) - Geneva > Lac d'Emosson
The eighth fraction will be disputed the penultimate mountain stage that could decide the Tour de Suisse.
There will be 188 km between Geneva and Lac d'Emosson; the last 60 kilometres will be incredibly difficult with 3 consecutives Hors Catégorie climbs: Col des Planches, Col de la Forclaz and the top finish at the 1968m of Lac d'Emosson (the highest altitude of these Tour de Suisse).
Stage 9 (Mountain) - Bagnes > Sion
The Tour de Suisse will end with a short but very difficult stage that could overturn the general classification.
After the start from Bagnes, there will be 132.5 kilometers of continuous ups and downs (with 4 long GPM to climb) that will bring the riders to the arrival of Sion.

Re: Tour de France preparation races (Cat. 3)
This is my track of the Tour Preparation Races : maps/tours/view/9872
Stage 1 :
Chrono-prologue difficult and always on the rise for specialists like Dennis, Dumoulin and Kwiatkowski.
Stage 2 :
Stage vallonata and insidious, continuous ups and downs especially in the final race. Eye to cyclists like Alaphilippe, Valverde and Teuns.
Stage 3 :
Another hilly stage with numerous tears and medium-short climbs that will make the course hard enough for men from CG.
Stage 4 :
Possible arrival in sprint or sprint restricted to 50/60 men, attention to the joints that can be created due to the difficulty of the initial route.
Stage 5 :
Very special semi-hilly path the first part, the second part with a bump hard for the sprinters or less suitable men to climb. The victory of the stage will go to men like Impey or Sagan.
Stage 6 :
First high mountain stage of this Corsa, you climb two very popular bumps in cycling, especially Verbier. Watch out for men like Quintana, Porte and the Yates.
Stage 7 :
Another stage of ascent, this time the obstacle is one but it is very long and tiring. You climb the slope of Thyon which reaches up to 2100 meters. Froome and Tom Dumoulin suitable for this type of climb.
Stage 8 :
Queen stage. The Nufenenpass, Passo San Gottardo, Furkapass and the arrival of Grimselpass are tackled in succession.
Stage 9 :
Final stopwatch that could decide the games.

Re: Tour de France preparation races (Cat. 3)
Tour de Suisse
maps/tours/view/9867
Stage 1: Konstanz - Kreuzlingen (prologue)
Stage 2: Kreuzlingen - Winterthur
Stage 3: Winterthur - Unterägeri
Stage 4: Gersau - Luzern (ITT)
Stage 5: Sursee - Montreux
Stage 6: Aigle - Martigny
(Col du Lein needs to be paved in the last 300/400 meters of its two sides)
Stage 7: Visp - Melide
Stage 8: Giubiasco - Lenzerheide
Stage 9: Meiringen - Münster
maps/tours/view/9867
Stage 1: Konstanz - Kreuzlingen (prologue)
4,6 km prologue for opening the race, starting in Konstanz (Germany) and finishing, after crossing the border in the middle of the city, in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. The first part is quite technical, passing through the Konstanz old town and over the Rin River twice (one of the times through the Fahrradbrücke, translated to english, the 'Bycicles Bridge'). But, since crossing the border, the course becomes an uphill straight way until the finish line.
Stage 2: Kreuzlingen - Winterthur
Typical 'flattish' Tour the Suisse stage, with a confortless terrain all over it, and finishing in a circuit with a little climb that won't probably avoid a bunch sprint, but that will eliminate most of the fast guys. Good stage for riders like Sagan, Matthews or Impey.
Stage 3: Winterthur - Unterägeri
New medium mountain stage, but this time, in a more 'Guillenian' style. Easy terrain until the city of Steinen, where an interesting climb like Sattelpass will start. Not long, but with quite high sustained slopes, where some attacks are expected. We will see if some of them becomes the winner movement or if they get caught in the flat zone just efore the beautiful village of Unterägeri
Stage 4: Gersau - Luzern (ITT)
Fourth stage, and here comes the long timetrial of the race, 32,5 sticky kilometers surrounding the Luzern Lake for reaching this majestic city.
Stage 5: Sursee - Montreux
From one little lake to a much bigger one, this fifth stage will be surely the best opportunity for the sprinters (even if the profile appears a bit distorted); only one mountain pass, long but veeery smooth could set aside the fastest guys of the race from the victory.
Stage 6: Aigle - Martigny
Aaand finally... the high mountain arrives in the Tour the Suisse, with a very interesting stage, which will feature the great premiere of one of the big climbs of the Valais, the Col du Lein, with almost 14 km at 9%. And, as final present for the riders, the ascenst to the Petite Forclaz, only 5 kilometers, but with most of its slopes over 10%. The finish line will be placed (don't read that if you are Dumoulin's or Moscon's fan) on Sébastien Reichenbach's native village, Martigny.
(Col du Lein needs to be paved in the last 300/400 meters of its two sides)
Stage 7: Visp - Melide
New difficult stage, with a little incursion through Italy in its middle part. Last 90 km, in the surroundings of Lugano, could be one of the keys of the race, with no flat terrain and 5 climbs, including the terrible one to Arosio-Alto Malcantone, the 'Swiss lacets' with slopes over 20%.
Stage 8: Giubiasco - Lenzerheide
New mountain stage, between Giubiasco and Lenzerheide, the village which will host in September, the Mountain Bike UCI World Championships. The biggest difficulty of the day, Passo del San Bernardino will be the first one, and probably, a mere procedure, but will mark the riders' legs for the rest of the day, where they will have to overcome Sankt Peter Pass (the first part of the climb to Arosa), the unpronounceable climb of Tschiertschen and the final ascent of the final ascent to the Lenzerheidepass, where the big climbers must have the last fight... of this day.
Stage 9: Meiringen - Münster
Last and decisive stage, with the characteristic format of the last years' Dauphiné mountain stages, but with some 'Zomegnanian vibes'. 4 ultramythical swiss colossus in the day's menu: For starting, the longer one: Grimselpass, 25 km at 6%, reaching for first time, the attitude of 2000 meters. It will follow, after a technical descent, the Furkapass, by its west side, passing next to the glacier where the Rhone River has its source. Gotthardpass will be the next difficulty; it will be climbed by the old road, but also descended through it , this is, by the famous cobbled and twisted road until reaching Airolo (where the 'Souvenir Matej Mohoric' will be placed ). For finishing: Nufenenpass, the highest and possibly hardest of them all, so here is where the victory contenders must give everything, because, since the top of this pass, it will be all downhill and an agonistic flat till the finish line, that will be placed in the aerodrome of Münster (just for increasing a little bit this agony )
