Contest #6 - Balkans Tour [Cat. 2]
Contest #6 - Balkans Tour [Cat. 2]
The pre-Tour de France Contests will consist in adding a 10-days race in Balkans used, like Dauphiné, as a preparation for the Grand Boucle.
You have to use at least 5 countries (placing a start and/or a finish) between
- Slovenia
- Bosnia
- Croatia
- Serbia
- Montenegro
- Kosovo
- Albania
- North Macedonia
- Greece
We won't make constraint on the type of stages, but we expect a race designed for Grand Tour contenders like Dauphiné/Tour de Suisse are.
Deadline will be on Saturday, August 8, 23.59

Re: Contest #6 - Balkans Tour [Cat. 2]
Here's my entry: maps/tours/view/15613
STAGE 1: Corfu > Corfu (174.74 km)
maps/viewtrack/365074
The first stage begins at the old Venetian fortress at Corfu and ends at the new fortress, after a loop of the northern part of the island that contains nine classified climbs.
STAGE 2: Igoumenitsa > Orikum (169.14 km)
maps/viewtrack/365092
We begin at the port city of Igoumenitsa and soon cross over into Albania. The terrain is fairly flat for the first couple of hours before a series of hills culminates in the first-category climb to Llogara Pass (10.7 km @ 7.4%, 23 km from finish).
STAGE 3: Fier > Verri (163.15 km)
maps/viewtrack/365161
The end of the first weekend takes us to the Albanian capital before the first-category climb to Qafa Priska (13.5 km @ 5.7%). After a challenging descent, with gradients often close to -10%, we climb to the finish at Verri.
STAGE 4: Shkodar > Dubrovnik (212.55 km)
maps/viewtrack/365464
The longest stage of the race follows the Adriatic coast and spans three countries, beginning in Shkodar before passing through Montenegro en route to Dubrovnik, finishing in the shadow of the Red Keep.
STAGE 5: Niksic > Teferic (159.85 km)
maps/viewtrack/366114
We return to Montenegro for a taste of La Planche des Belle Filles, with a summit finish at Teferic (6.1 km @ 12%, with the final three kilometres on unpaved roads).
STAGE 6: Pljevlja > Sarajevo (162.90 km)
maps/viewtrack/364921
An undulating stage takes us into Bosnia and Herzegovina, where two first-category climbs await before the finish at the martyrs' memorial in Sarajevo.
STAGE 7: Zenica > Prijedor (182.70 km)
maps/viewtrack/364741
Three climbs in the first eighty kilometres will provide opportunities for a significant breakaway, but it will have to hold off the peloton over the final seventy kilometres, which are mostly flat, in order to prevent a bunch sprint.
STAGE 8: Velika Gorica > Zagreb (37.96 km, ITT)
maps/viewtrack/364709
A long time trial in the Croatian capital will allow the diesels among the GC hopefuls to carve out some time gaps before the final weekend. The course is complicated slightly by a short, steep climb and a couple of brief cobbled sectors as we pass through the old city.
STAGE 9: Novo Mesto > Planina Jezerca (162.06 km)
maps/viewtrack/364675
The race will be decided in the final two stages in Slovenia. The first is largely flat, punctuated by a couple of short and steep second-category climbs, before finishing with the HC climb to Planina Jezerca (11.9 km @ 8.3%).
STAGE 10: Bled > Mount Mangart (104.01 km)
maps/viewtrack/364622
The race comes to a climax with a short but brutal stage, featuring the first-category climb to Vrsic Pass (9.3 km @ 8.2%) and the summit finish on Mount Mangart (16 km @ 8.8%).

Re: Contest #6 - Balkans Tour [Cat. 2]
Hi, here's my Balkans Tour
maps/tours/view/15711
maps/tours/view/15711
The tour will start in Greece, in the island of Corfu, and finish in Bled (Slovenia), famous for it' castle and its lake, one of the symbols of the country. The race will also pass through Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Bosnia (just a few kilometers), and Croatia, visiting some of the main cities and touristic points of all of the countries, and discovering some new others that are unknown for most of the people. The race will consist in 10 stages, including a prologue, a long ITT and four hard stages for defining the GC, distributed all around the race, so most of the countries have some relevance in the race.
Stage 1: Corfu (prologue)
Pretty exciting prologue through the streets of Corfu, with a stunning start at the Old Venetian Fortress and some little climbs (like the one to the New Venetian Fortress). The finish line will be located in the Old Harbour, after passing by some of the most iconical streets of the Old Town.
Stage 2: Igoumenitsa - Sarandë
The second stage will carry cyclists from Greece to Albania. It will be quite hilly, with few places to rest. The last part of the stage will feature a pass through The Blue Eye (Syri I Kalter) Forest, and a last and tricky hill in the surroundings of Sarandë, major city of the Albanian Riviera, that will decide the stage winner.
Stage 3: Vlorë - Tiranë
Easy stage passing two the three biggest cities in Albania: Vlorë, Durrës and Tirana. First real opportunity for the sprinters in the wide and mostly straight streets of the capital.
Stage 4: Burrel - Brezovica Ski Resort
Fourth stage will be the first opportunity for the climbers to show up, with two important last climbs, the first one, soft but very long, and the last and decisive climb, shorter, but with slopes above 8-9% in almost every moment. The finish line will be placed in Kosovo, on the Brezovica Ski Resort, the largest ski resort and winter tourism center of the country.
Stage 5: Dakovica - Podgorica
Long and "transition" stage, very suitable for a breakaway. If not, the sprinters who can handle some mountains will be the main favourites for the victory in the small journey that the race will do through Montenegro. The stage will climb the "Leqet e Hotit", a road famous for its hairpins, something like an Albanian Lacets.
Stage 6: Tivat - Kotor (ITT)
Beautiful 30 km timetrial in the Montenegrin coast, just before the decissive mountain stages. The race will elapse through the stunning Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska), all surrounded by mountains and huge cliffs.
Stage 7: Dubrovnik - Biokovo (Sveti Jure)
Seventh stage, and time again for the favourites to fight in the mountains. Even though almost all the stage will be flat, through the beautiful Croatian (and Bosnian) coast. Even though, with the finish in the awful Sveti Jure the race will have all the spectacle it deserves, or even more.
Stage 8: Split - Pag
New flat stage, again touring the Croatian coast, from the World Heritage city of Split to the city of Pag, located in the namesake island. The race will also visit the towns of Šibenik and Zadar.
Stage 9: Senj - Idrija
First of the last decisive two stages. It will be a very long day, crossing the border between Croatia and Slovenia, where the race will remain until the end. The stage is aim to be hard, with a good quantity of accumulated denivel and two last climbs, where the GC guys will have to fight.
Stage 10: Ajdovscina - Bled
Last battle for the final victory in the Julian Alps, this time the stage will be much shorter than the previous one, but also more intense, with some long climbs for attacking and turning upside down the race, after the finish in Bled, in front of its emblematic lake.

Re: Contest #6 - Balkans Tour [Cat. 2]
I opted for climber/puncher oriented stage race with this version of the Balkans Tour, similar to how the Tour de Suisse is often organized. This Balkans Tour starts in Slovenia and finishes in Greece, crossing eight countries total in its path. Enjoy!
