CONTEST: Beginning season 2023

Post by BETTO »

NEW CONTEST!

Hi! I'll try to propose a new contest.

Participants have to create two races at the biggining of the season:

1) The first races to create is a tour that can replace Tour of Provence (9.02 - 12.02 - 4 stages). This tour have to be held in an european region that doesn't host a major race (World Tour or Pro Series) and where wheater allows to.

2) The second race to create is a tour that can replace Tour of Oman (10.02 - 14.02 - 5 stages). This tour have to be held in everyone's birthplace (city and its district).

Is there anyone that want to partecipate?

I'm in.

Does everyone's birthplace mean I need to make a route in Holstebro, Denmark, and how far away can I go away from it?

This will be the first contest this year, and the points you get will be transferred to a GC, where we take all points in every contest and see who wins.

That's fine, but I think I will make it even smaller, into Central Jutland Region.

Are we all agree on the principle that Tour of Oman is pratically a one-hotel tour and that we have to keep it that way ?

That doesn't matter. It probably just means that Corsica need a professional bike race.

Here is my Tours for the first contest of 2023:

maps/tours/view/22385

The first race consist of 4 stages, a short prologue, one flat stage, a hilly stage and a high mountain stage with a MountainTopFinish.

Stage 1: Prologue
Ribeira Grande > Ribeira Grande 6km
First stage is a short prologue with a short cobbled hill to the finish line (400m-5%)
Image

Stage 2: Flat
Ribeira Grande > Lagoa 156km
Stage two is the best opportunity the sprinters get in this Tour, allthough they will need to have good legs if someone set a high pace in the steep hills in the first part of the route, last climb is reached 21km before the finish in Lagoa, which is a false flat uphill sprint.
Image

Stage 3: Hilly
Ponta Delgada > Povoacao 180.5km
Stage three is a hilly stage that could be perfect for a breakaway as top of the final climb sits almost 15 km from the finish line. Terrain is undulating throughout the whole stage but a little less demanding in middle part.
Image
Image
Image

Stage 4: High Mountains
Capelas > Barrosa 132km
Final stage is a short one with 3 fairly long and steep climbs, the final climb averaging over 9%.
Image

The second tour mainly uses the roads of the Vesterålen district, and has three flat stages and 2 hilly stages finishing on top of a hill. Image
maps/tours/view/22386

Stage 1: Flat
Stokmarknes > Svolvær 176km
The first stage is mostly flat on route to Svolvær in Lofoten.
Image
Image

Stage 2: Hilly
Harstad > Harstad(Samaåsen) 186.5km
Stage 2 is the only stage taking place entirely outside Vesterålen, and overall its the hardest stage of the tour with 8 categorised climbs.
Image
Image
Image

Stage 3: Flat
Lødingen > Steine 186km
Third stage is another mass sprint stage, the last KOM is over 90 km from the finish line, parts of the final circuit can be exposed to wind along the sea.
Image
Image
Image Steine

Stage 4: hilly
Hovden > Storheia Summit 180km
Fourth stage is flat with a hill top finish, Starting out in the occean gap in the small fishing village of Hovden running all along Langøya before entering Hadseløya and the final climb up to Storheia, the Mount Ventoux of Vesterålen.

Stage 5: flat
Stokmarknes > Stokmarknes 141.5km
The Tour ends where it started in Stokmarknes, with three short local laps on narrow roads.

TOUR DE THESSALONIKI
maps/tours/view/22420

There are no Greek races on either the World Tour or the Pro Series, and the International Tour of Hellas, a 2.1 race that returned last year after an eight-year hiatus, did not enter the region of Macedonia. To avoid ruffling any geopolitical feathers, I've named the race after the city around which it is based, rather than the region itself.

STAGE 1: Thessaloniki - Aristotelous Square > Thessaloniki - Heptapyrgion (13.25 KM, ITT)
maps/viewtrack/515866

The race starts with a short time trial through the city streets, culminating in a climb to the Byzantine citadel that overlooks Thessaloniki.

STAGE 2: Thermi > Nikiti (201.31 KM)
maps/viewtrack/515870

This stage, which follows the coast road around the Sithonian peninsula, should be the best opportunity for the sprinters, but the many short climbs along the way will sap their legs and provide opportunities for attacks.

Image

Image

STAGE 3: Ouranoupoli > Pylaia (163.49 KM)
maps/viewtrack/515947

Although the roads in this stage are relatively flatter, a second-category hill around twenty kilometres from the finish might force a GC selection.

Image

Image

Image

STAGE 4: Kilkis > Elatocheri - Pierias (155.65 KM)
maps/viewtrack/515955

The race comes to a conclusion at the ski station of Elatocheri-Pierias, with a flat run-in for almost a hundred kilometres followed by two major climbs that will provide plenty of opportunities to settle the GC.

TOUR DE CHANDIGARH
maps/tours/view/22409

I was born in a north Indian city close to the foothills of the Himalayas, and have always believed that it would be a great venue for a stage race. Unfortunately, there are very few fans of pro cycling in the area—though the city and its surrounding region has well-maintained wide roads, and a cycling subculture seems to have begun emerging during the pandemic.

STAGE 1: Dera Bassi > Panchkula (185.50 KM)
maps/viewtrack/515651

We begin the race by heading into the Morni Hills, and the GC battle commences over four second-category climbs, which generally feature a series of steep steps that will make it almost impossible to set a steady rhythm. However, there is plenty of road to make up lost ground before the finish, so the first leader's jersey will probably be decided by a reduced bunch sprint.

STAGE 2: Kharar > New Chandigarh (174.81 KM)
maps/viewtrack/515660

The second stage includes two and a half laps of a fifty-kilometre circuit in the Shivalik foothills on the outskirts of Chandigarh, with a largely flat route interspersed with some lumpy stuff.

Image

Image

STAGE 3: Sukhna Lake > Sukhna Lake (15.28 KM, ITT)
maps/viewtrack/515662

A flat individual time trial takes us around the Sukhna Lake and the Rock Garden, the city's most well-known landmarks.

Image

Image

STAGE 4: Rupnagar > Chail Palace (158.93 KM)
maps/viewtrack/515817

Built by the Maharaja of Patiala after the British viceroy expelled him from the summer capital at Shimla for marrying an Irish woman, the Chail Palace will witness what should be the final GC battle of the race, at the end of the queen stage, which again features four major climbs.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

STAGE 5: Chandigarh > Chandigarh (118.46 KM)
maps/viewtrack/515838

We finish the race with a short criterium through the streets of Chandigarh. The wide boulevards, set on a grid designed by the Swiss architect Le Corbusier, are interspersed with some of the city's many roundabouts and some relatively narrower roads to create a twisty circuit that features over fifty turns in twenty-five kilometres.

I am confident i can do it this time, I just want to know what is meant with my home district. Officially on our only country subdivision level, my home "district" is 62 km2. Should I use the statistical region of Northern Littoral - area around Nova Gorica? The whole Littoral?(areas around Nova Gorica and Koper)

Here is my routes:

The first route is on Corsica.
maps/tours/view/22353

The second route is in Central-Jutland, around Holstebro were I was born. The highest point is only 80 meters above sea level. I have pretty much ridden every single one of the roads. There is also a stage with potential for a lot of crosswinds. The last stage is a gravel stage.
