One question. There's this rule: "The six stages before Thursday 8 must be set ALL in France, the six stages after Thursday 8 must be set ALL in Italy", but the stage that takes place on Thursday 8, where has to be: in France or Italy? I think in France, but I'm not sure, that's why I'm asking.

You can have it where you like. All in France, all in Italy or half-half.

stage 9: Tuscany hills will be the scenario of today's battle, another dirt road climb is on the menu

stage 10: the last sprint of the course? Maybe, but as stage 2 the sprinters will have to survive on a third category climb

Hello,

This my presentation for the Winter Stage Races contest.
maps/tours/view/8688

This tour is suited for various types of riders and only a strong allrounder can win this race. It features cobbles, gravel roads, hilly stage, medium mountain stages, mountain stages, hilltop finishes, a mountaintop finishes, two different types of time trials and some stages for the sprinters.

Stage 1 Fontainebleau > Fontainebleau 186,5 km Flat/Cobbles

Profile
Image

Last 5km
Image

This stage is a circuit around Fontainebleau which has to be done two times. There are 12 cobbled sectors with 10.8km of cobbles. The last cobbled sector is the short but steep climb of the Côte du Prince which is just about 5km away from the finish line and should play a key part in the outcome of this stage.

Stage 2 Auxerre > Uchon 197km Hilly/Uphill Finish

Profile
Image

Last 20km
Image

This stage is featured in the Morvan Massif. There are few climbs in it. The last 20km with three climbs in a row could create some gaps. The finish line is at the top of the climb towards Uchon. This is climb is steep with an average gradient at 10.5% for 2.6km.

Stage 3 Mâcon > Valence 185km Flat

Profile
Image

This is the first sprint which has no obstacles in the final part of the stage which could hinder the sprinters. There is the Mont Thous in the first half of the stage but there is enough time afterwards to catch the breakaway. A Mass sprint is probable.

Stage 4 Vaison-la-Romaine > Station du Mont Serein 199.5km Mountain

Last 5km

This is the queen stage of this tour. It loops around the famous Mont Ventoux. With two HC climbs and two 1st category climbs it should great huge gaps. The finish is one km after the climb up to Mont Serein which is like the Chalet Reynard on the way up to the Mont Ventoux.

Stage 5 Apt > La Londe-des-Maures 163km Flat

Stage 6 Frejus > Nice 189km Mountain

Last 35km

This is the stage around Nice which contains the Col d'Eze. But this is different to the usual Paris - Nice stage because it is a mountain stage featuring the Col de Turini. After this HC climb there is the Côte de Peille and the Col d'Eze left.

Stage 7 Monaco > Monaco 27.5km ITT

Profile
Image

The first Time Trial is a hilly one. It starts and finishes in Monaco. The riders tackle the La Turbie climb.

Stage 8 Sanremo > Recco 163.5 Flat

Profile
Image

Last 5km
Image

This stage is foloows the Ligurian Coast and is flat which should suit the sprinters.

Stage 9 La Spezia > Siena 198km Flat/Uphill finish

Profile
Image

Last 5km
Image

This stage is a flat stage which finishes uphill on the same track as the one day race Strade Bianche.

Stage 10 Siena > Montepulciano 137 Hilly/Gravel

Profile
Image

Last 10km
Image

This stage features the famous white roads. 16km of this stage are on those gravel roads. There are also a few steep climbs in the end which could create some gaps.

Stage 11 Montepulciano > Eremo Di Camaldoli 161.5km Mountain/Uphill finish

Profile
Image

Last 25km
Image

This stage is the last chance for the climbers to make up some time before the last time trial. It has a long run in till the final two climbs.

Stage 12 San Piero in Bagno > Rimini 141km flat

Profile
Image

Last 5km
Image

This stage is the last chance for the sprinters to contest for a stage win. On the way to Rimini there is one climb which shoul not hinder the sprinters. In Rimini the riders have do some laps on the circuit.

Stage 13 Rimini > Rimini 28.5 ITT

Profile
Image

The final stage of this Tour is a flat time trial. This stage could decide the outcme of this stage race. The time trial is flat and should suite the strong powerhouses.

Image

Stage 1 : Versailles - Sens 170km Flat
Stage 2 : Montargis - Nevers 156km Flat
Stage 3 : Vichy - Sail-sous-Couzan 156km Medium Mountain

Stage 12 : Reggio Emilia - Ravenna 186km Flat
Stage 13 : Pesaro - San Benedetto del Tronto 219km Medium Mountain

Stage 1 : Versailles - Sens 170km ** (1280m D+)
A quite flat stage (which starts in front of the "Chateau de Versailles", historical house of french king Louis XIV) but the finish is a little hilly with two short climbs in the last 10km.

Climbs
Côte des Bois Brûlés (4ème catégorie, 1.2 Km à 6.7%, Km 14.5)
Côte d'Orsay (4ème catégorie, 1.9 Km à 4.4%, Km 29.8)
Cote de l'Escargot (4ème catégorie, 1.2 Km à 4.5%, Km 37.1)
Côte de Champigny (4ème catégorie, 3.8 Km à 3.4%, Km 140.9)
Côte de Nemours (4ème catégorie, 0.9 Km à 8.9%, Km 163.1)
Côte des Paillons (4ème catégorie, 0.6 Km à 12.9%, Km 166.2)
Image

Stage 2 : Montargis - Nevers 156km * (1266m D+)
A flat stage, sprinters will probably compete for the win in Nevers.

Climbs
Côte de Les Flechets (4ème catégorie, 1.5 Km à 6.1%, Km 74.5)
Sancerre (3ème catégorie, 1.7 Km à 8.8%, Km 104.0)
Image

Stage 3 : Vichy - Sail-sous-Couzan 156km *** (3319m D+)

First "mountain" stage with the difficult Col du Béal in the final 40km. We may see a breakaway win

Col du Beau Louis (3ème catégorie, 17.6 Km à 2.6%, Km 37.8)
Col de la Charme (2ème catégorie, 7.1 Km à 4.6%, Km 50.5)
Col des Sagnes (4ème catégorie, 4.2 Km à 4.1%, Km 61.5)
Col du Pertuis (2ème catégorie, 7.3 Km à 4.6%, Km 74.8)
Col de la Loge (3ème catégorie, 9.5 Km à 3.2%, Km 87.1)
Col du Béal (1ère catégorie, 13.8 Km à 6.5%, Km 130.6)
Col de la Croix Ladret (3ème catégorie, 3.4 Km à 5.5%, Km 143.6)
Image

Stage 4 : Saint-Etienne - Orange 204km ** (1769m D+)
Another opportunity for the sprinters but the 50km will be quite hard for them and we can expect a move from some teams (for Sagan or Matthews) in order to eliminate some fast riders.

Climbs
Col de Grand Bois (2ème catégorie, 14.5 Km à 4.2%, Km 15.6)
Col de Burdignes (2ème catégorie, 5.4 Km à 6.8%, Km 33.5)

Côte des Cours (3ème catégorie, 1.3 Km à 5.0%, Km 103.8)
Image

Stage 5 : Salon-de-Provence - Toulon (Mont Faron) 163km **** (3233m D+)
This is the first stage that ends at the top of a "mountain", the classic arrival of the former Tour Méditerranéen, the "Mont Faron".

Climbs
Col de St Anne (3ème catégorie, 1.9 Km à 8.0%, Km 52.1)
Col de la Gineste (3ème catégorie, 5.3 Km à 4.7%, Km 88.8)

Image

Stage 6 : Cannes - Nice 239km ****** (5702m D+)
A very very very long and tough stage between two famous french places. It starts in the "Boulevard de la Croisette", close to Cannes' "Palais des Festivals" and ends as usual on the "Promenade des Anglais" in Nice. Ten climbs are listed and after the intermediate sprint of Nice, it will be a roaller coster of 75kms with the climbs of Aspremont, Saut de Millo (just the middle section for this one), La Turbie and of course the Col d'Eze.

La Turbie (2ème catégorie, 9.2 Km à 4.4%, Km 211.9)
Col d'Éze (1ère catégorie, 7.3 Km à 5.9%, Km 227.1)
Image

Stage 7 : Menton - Savona 157km *** (2432m D+)
In this stage, the riders who wants to shine in Milano - Sanremo can test themselves. The first third of the stage goes down the Poggio, the Pompeiana and the Cipressa. We also got the Colle Micheri (from The Laigueglia Trophy) in the middle of the stage before two other climbs in the last 25kms.
NB: We climb the Poggio by a very very narrow road. If it's too much, there's an alternative climb with another road on the left, it's longer (3km) and not that difficult (4,3%) but i guess we could try the narrow road since it's in the beginning of the stage.

Climbs
Poggio di Sanremo (3ème catégorie, 1.1 Km à 12.9%, Km 31.7)
Pompeiana (4ème catégorie, 4.8 Km à 3.4%, Km 46.3)
Cipressa (3ème catégorie, 3.3 Km à 6.9%, Km 58.7)
Gorleri (3ème catégorie, 3.2 Km à 5.9%, Km 75.4)

Borghi (3ème catégorie, 6.1 Km à 4.8%, Km 136.0)
Bergeggi (4ème catégorie, 1.5 Km à 7.4%, Km 147.1)
Image

Stage 8 : Genova - Foce del Rastrello 156km ***** (4639m D+)
Second and last stage ending on a summit, but not the end of difficulties for sure. It starts in Genoa and end at the top of the "Foce del Rastrello" on the border between Liguria and Toscana. The stage is not very long but there will be eight climbs including the arrival one which is 15,2km long with an average slope of 5,6%.

Climbs
Monte Fasce (1ère catégorie, 11.3 Km à 6.5%, Km 14.6)
Passo della Spinarola (2ème catégorie, 5.9 Km à 7.1%, Km 42.7)
Ruta di Camogli (3ème catégorie, 3.7 Km à 6.8%, Km 58.3)
Valico di Monte San Giacomo (1ère catégorie, 6.3 Km à 8.3%, Km 88.3)
Valico di Monte Domenico (2ème catégorie, 3.5 Km à 8.0%, Km 99.6)

Passo della Mola (2ème catégorie, 16.6 Km à 3.7%, Km 132.5)
Foce del Rastrello (1ère catégorie, 15.2 Km à 5.6%, Arrivée)
Image

Stage 9 : La Spezia - Empoli 184km * (1088m D+)
a flat stage for sprinters where we go along the sea until Livorno before climbing two short hills which can't prevent fast riders to fight for the victory in Empoli.

Climbs
Zanego (4ème catégorie, 7.3 Km à 3.6%, Km 17.5)
Lari Viale della Rimembranza (4ème catégorie, 0.9 Km à 6.2%, Km 134.7)

Image

Stage 10 : Firenze - Firenze (ITT) 38km ***** (558m D+)
A quite long ITT around Firenze that can be divided in two parts : the two first thirds of the stage are slightly hilly and the last 10km are totally flat.

Climbs
Pian dei Giullari (4ème catégorie, 2.2 Km à 5.3%, Km 7.0)
Santa Maria a Marignolle (4ème catégorie, 1.2 Km à 7.1%, Km 21.1)
Image

Stage 11 : Montecatini Terme - Bologna 181km **** (4332m D+)
Back to business for the climbers with two long climbs early in the stage and then a hilly second part of stage with a linking of shorter climbs until the finish line in Bologna.

Climbs

Via di Monte Donato (3ème catégorie, 3.0 Km à 6.2%, Km 175.7)
Image

Stage 12 : Reggio Emilia - Ravenna 186km * (148m D+)
Last chance of winning for the sprinters even if there are a little more than 10 kms on strade bianche during the first half of the stage.
Image

Stage 13 : Pesaro - San Benedetto del Tronto 219km **** (4052m D+)
A long and not quiet at all stage to end this Paris-Adriatic. The first 60 kms are quite easy but the last 150 are marked out with twelve climbs. It's never high (479m is the highest point of the stage), it's never long (7,4km for the longest climb) but the slope is often hard with seven climbs over 9% and the last one is only seven kms away from the finish line in San Benedetto del Tronto.

Climbs
Via Macerata (4ème catégorie, 4.4 Km à 4.3%, Km 68.7)

My Paris-Adriatico, from Orsay to San Benedetto del Tronto

Stage 1: Orsay - Joigny
A flat stage, the sprinters will battle it out for the first leading jersey.
Image

Stage 2: Châtillon-sur-Seine – Le Creusot
There never is a real flat part in this stage, but I think most sprinters will be able to hang on. Possibilities for the punchers on the final, uncategorised, climb just outside of Le Creusot. A perfect stage to simulate the final of Milan-San Remo.
Image

Stage 3: Mâcon – Saint-Étienne
A stage some riders will definitely feel tomorrow. Tricky climb at the finish climb, so the first real chance for the punchers, and maybe some small gaps as well between the GC riders.
Image

Stage 4: Romans-sur-Isère – Sisteron
An unpredictable stage, the breakaway has a good chance to survive. The sprinters will have troubles on the climbs, but it's one of their few chances for a stage, so I expect them to battle it out for the win.
Image

Stage 5: Saint-André-les-Alpes – La Madone d’Utelle
150km today, with three category 1-climbs. Personally I don't expect too big differences in the GC after today, but it will be clear who's not in a good shape.
Image

Stage 6: Carros – Nice
Tricky stage with some technical downhills. Riders who lost time yesterday can try something now.
Image

Stage 7: Menton – Genua
This stage mostly follows the route of Milan-San Remo, but in the opposite direction. Most likely this will end in a sprint at Genua.
Image

Stage 8: Rapallo – Sestri Levante
Time trial of 20km, with a little climb in the first half.
Image

Stage 9: La Spezia – Abetone
Second mountain stage of the race. The first half shouldn't be too difficult, but the climb to Abetone will be decisive.
[Image

Stage 10: Empoli - Chianciano Terme
Two difficult climbs on dirt roads today, so everyone must pay attention. I expect a sprint with a small group at the finish, sprinter may even survive.
Image

Stage 11: Orvieto - Assisi
Flat beginning of the stage, but the final is really hard. The category 1-climb Eremo della Carceri, 9km at 7%, will be really hard for some riders. After that there is an another wall to climb, an we finish uphill in Assisi. This stage will really make the difference.
Image

Stage 12: Spoleto - Sarnano
Last day to try something in the GC. There will be firework on these climbs.
Image

Stage 13: Ancona - San Benedetto del Tronto
The sprinters who survived the last few days have another opportunity for a stage win on the final day.

Re: Winter Stage Races (Cat. 2, deadline on 14/3)

Stage 1: Saint-Germain-en-Laye - Briare

Flat, but long stage, starting as usual in Paris-Nice, in the Yvelines department, next to the beautiful Chateau of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, and finishing in the town of Briare after a circuit through some nearby villages.

Stage 2: Magny-Cours - Clermont-Ferrand

The race will get inside the Central Massif in only its second stage. Won't be a stage for opening gaps in the GC, but a good opportunity for a late attack or even a breakaway. If one of those don't succeed, the stage will decide in an interesting sprint between the fast men who were able to stay in the peloton.

Stage 3: Brioude - Domeyrat (ITT)

Here is where the real race starts, 24 rough kilometers of timetrial through the narrow roads of this zone will make the first differences between the people who will try to fight for the yellow-blue stripped jersey :asd: of the general classification.

Brioude:

Stage 4: Langeac - Annonay-Davézieux

New medium mountain stage, this time quite harder than the second one, with a rolling terrain in the first half and two important climbs, with opposite characteristics: the first one, the Côte du Dorier, short and far away from the finish line, but with really hard, "guillenesque" slopes. The second one, the Col de la République will add 13,5 soft but tiring kilometers to riders' legs. At last, a small hill for puncheurs will decide the stage in the same finish where David Millar won Jean-Christophe Péraud in the 2012 Tour de France.

Stage 5: Tournon-sur-Rhône - Orange

New opportunity for the sprinters in a stage which will follow the Rhone river from north to south for finishing in the historical city of Orange.

Stage 6: Pertuis - Grasse

The race will get inside the Provence with the first test between the favourites. A hilly and tiring terrain will accompany the riders till the big climb of the day: the Col du Pilon, with almost 24 km of uphill, that will need to be the sceneary of some attacks if someone wants to gain some time; because, from then, only a skilled rider who can gain some seconds in the technical downhill or a fast and explosive guy will have the chance of obtain a good prize at the finish line of the nice village of Grasse.

Stage 7: Cagnes-sur-Mer - Nice

Finally, the high mountain arrives in the race. A stage with some "Paris-Nice vibes", but quite harder from what this race has us used to. First difficulty will be Col de Porte, from there, no flat kilometer till Nice. Then the race will climb to its higher point of all of it: the Col de Turini, famous for its twisted and sinuous roads that year after year are used by the Monte Carlo Rally; even though, it is still very unknown for cycling. A long downhill, first until Sospel and, after climbing the Col de Castillon, until Menton, at the sea level will carry cyclists to the final part of the stage: the climbings to Col de la Madone and mythical Col d'Èze, this time from the Cap d'Ail side, much unusual for the audience, but probably much more scenical than the normal side. If something has to be decided after these 5 terrific climbs, it will be at Promenade des Anglais, as tradition says.

Stage 8: Albenga - Sestri Levante

The race will enter in Liguria with this kind of inverse Milano - Sanremo, shorter but with harder climbs and which will feature Le Manie, far away from the finish line, but as a reminder for some people, just to see it still exists . From then, a flat terrain interrupted by 3 neither long, nor steep climbs. We will see if they are able to avoid a massive sprint, just like it happens in La Classicissima.

Stage 9: Lido di Camaiore - Siena

From a centenary race we move to a much younger one, because the Winter Stage Race will reach beautiful Siena, and will include the last 40 km of the Strade Bianche, with the last three dirt sections of it: Monteaperti, Colle Pinzuto and Le Tolfe, just before an alternative finish in Piazza del Duomo, climbing Via Fontebranda instead of Via Santa Caterina. A lighter version of the Eroica for the riders who couldn't ride it because they were in this race. Good day to turn around the GC for the Wellens, Kwiatkowski, Bardet, etc... to the detriment of the purest climbers.

*Note: It should be enough space to host the finish in Piazza del Duomo (I have made sure that the race could pass by all the streets before arriving there). If it wasn't possible, the alternative plan is making the classic Strade Bianche finale, climbing Via Santa Caterina and arriving in Il Campo.

Stage 10: Montevarchi - Assisi

As the racers enter in central Italy, the race gets to its decisive part. Medium mountain stage perfect for some attacks in the last tricky section, climbing first the Muro di San Damiano, and then after a first pass through the finish line, the Eremo Delle Carceri, with 3.8 km at 10%. For ending up the day, the final ascent to Piazza del Comune, that we already saw in Giro 2012, through the narrow Assisi streets and majestic Bassilica di San Francesco.

Stage 11: Foligno - Castelluccio di Norcia

Here comes possibly the queen stage of this race, that will be held in the scenic and singular Sibillini Mountains. Hardness till the start and long mountain passes will be the main features of the day. But this stage will mean something much more trascendent than this, because most of it will cross one of the most damaged areas by the 2016 devastating earthquake. The race will have the main target of giving visibility to all these villages, such as Capodacqua, Pescara and Arquanta del Tronto or even the finish locality of Castellucio di Norcia, and all its population, that are still in a highly frail situation.
The course of the race will also be seized to fix up some of the roads that the earthquake spoilted a year and a half ago.

Stage 12: Campotosto - Civitanova Marche

Last inline stage, with the last opportunity for the fast guys (if the don't get stucked in the hilly part of the middle of the stage), but also a new opportunity for the damaged zone to show up and for their people to forget, just for a moment all their problems, while watching the riders passing by. This time, the race will go through the Campotosto Lake zone and the Amatrice surroundings (it won't pass through the center of the town, because it's still quite dangerous) until the city of Ascoli-Piceno. From then, some hills and a flat terrain by the sea for reaching Civitanova Marche.

Stage 13: San Benedetto del Tronto - San Benedetto del Tronto (ITT)

If the race started with a classic Paris-Nice stage, it will end with another classic: the final San Benedetto del Tronto timetrial of Tirreno Adriatico. But, as the race is twice as long as the "Corsa dei due mari", this stage will feature almost twice of the conventiona distance too. Same start and finish line than there, but slightly different route, passing first by Grottamare and then, as usual, by Porto d'Ascoli, for riding the last 4 kilometers through the promenadeuntil reaching the finish line in Viale Bruno Buozzi.

Stage 1:
Typical Paris Nice opening stage. The stage starts in Créteil and then goes through the rural area around Paris to Etampes.
Where the sprinters can compete on a sloping arrival. The winner will be a strong sprinter.
Stage2:
The stage goes from Reuilly to Troyes. Its looks like a flat stage but at the end there's a hill La Rampe of 2.3 km's at 5%, the top is 10 km from the finish.
But normaly not hard enough to eliminate the sprinters.
Stage 3:
The third stage is a hilly one with thre climbs of 3th categorie and four of 4th categorie. Besides the finish is uphill with the 'côte de Marcellois'.
A steap hill of 1.4 km at 8.6%
Stage 4:
Stage four is the first mountain stage. Halfway we have the Col de la Joux (top 1039 m, 2nd categorie). At the end we have two cols of 3th categorie
immediately after each other and without a descent in between. The finish is in Lamoura and only seven km's after the last climb.
Stage 5:
After the start in Grénoble it immediately goes uphill in different stairs to the col de Grimone (1315 m). After a long descent there are two more hills:
Col de pas de Lauzens (4.6 Km at 5.3%) and Côte de la Combe (2.9 Km at 4.9%). Thereafter its only 10 km's till the finish in Crest.
Stage 6:
we are leaving from Crest again. It is a true mid-mountain stage. After the last top its still 50 km's so strong sprinters can survive
but I think that the break away makes the biggest chance in Sisteron.
Stage 7:
A variation on the classic Paris Nice final stage.
Stage 8:
The start is in the mythical cycling city Sanremo. This stage goes along the ligurian coast, with two hills of 2nd categorie the GC riders will have to pay attention.
Finish is after a descent in Varazze.
Stage 9:
This is the last chances for sprinters. Start is in Genoa, finish in the beatiful Tuscan city Lucca. Only only the montepitoro can spread a spanner in the food of the sprinters.
Stage 10:
Surely one of the most attractive stages in this grand tour. There are some steep Tuscan hills on the menu and a strade bianche
of more than 8 kilometers (end at 27 km from the finish). The finish is in Cortona on a hill of 2 km's with a moyenne of 12%!!!.
maps/viewtrack/197757
Stage 11:
This is the hardest stage with arrival at the Frontignano Pian dell'Arco (8.2 Km at 7.4%).
Stage 12:
Start of the last ride in line is in Amatrice, a village that was recently hit by an earthquake. After a hilly day, the finish is uphill at Fermo.
There(s also a little cobble section (200m at 12%) at one km before finish.
Stage 13:
A time trial of 20 km's to conclude the race.
