Giro d'Italia 2018 (Cat. 1, deadline on 4/5)

Post by emmea90 »

Contest #2 - Giro d'Italia 2018
The first GT contest (Cat. 1) of the year will, of course, be on Giro d'Italia. Why I'll open it so early? Because drawing a GT is not for all and i want to give you three months to do it (at least say thanks)

The contest will be about redrawing the 2018 Giro d'Italia. That will mainly means
- You have to keep the start from Israel. You can change the starting points and cities but you have to pass on West Jerusalem and you cannot go in Palestinian territories for safety reasons.
- You have to end it in Rome
- You cannot repeat finals or key parts of stages of 2017 real race
- You have to put a stage start or a stage finish in at least 15 different regions
- 2018 is 100 years after WWI end, so you have to remember it in at least two stages

Opposite from the other contests, you can have a maximum of TWO routes submitted for this one

The Giro should be balanced, offering a "Dumoulin" and a "Quintana" the same chances to compete for the maglia rosa.

The Deadline will be on 4/5, when the first rider of real Giro d'Italia will start his ITT

You must submit your routes in this topic submitting the link. As stated in general presentation, you can submit from 1 to 3 routes. You can use this topic also for asking the question - we can answer question about climb / road / finish praticability but we won't answer to anyone's questions in private, only in this topic.

Everyone who will present the route also posting in the topic profiles and descriptions in this topic will start the voting phase with 3 points bonus

Good luck anyone

-------------------

In Italian:

Il contest verte sul ridisegnare il Giro 2018 con queste condizioni

A) Mantenere la partenza da Israele, senza sconfinare in altri stati o territori palestinesi. Si possono cambiare le città ma bisogna passare da Gerusalemme
B) Bisogna finire a Roma

Start from Jerusalem on Friday for 3 days in Israel. First stage very short and opened for a huge battle for the pink jersey. Then more cool stages.

Transfert and rest day on monday. Back to Italia with the first submit arrival. Then long transition stage for sprinters/puncheurs. The first week end with a ITT for both climbers and specialists.

The second week is for climbers with 4 mountains stages with lots of difficulties.

The last week is dangerous for leaders with various profile. 2 hilly and tricky stage (once very long), a moutain stage a ITT and a strade bianche stage. The giro can be lose on the last week with profiles for attackers.

The WWII stage are the ITT in Vittorio Veneto and the next stage starting for Gorizia following the Izonzo for some kilometers in Slovenia

My Giro 2018 maps/tours/view/8972
Image[/img]
Una crono individuale come opener, non sarà una crono piatta ma presenterà due salite pedalabili, pane per cronoman come Dennis Roglic e Dumoulin

Image[/img]
Tel Aviv Jerusalem 2 cities 2 marathons 1 breakaway 1 sprint

Image[/img]
1 tappa per i cronoman, 1 tappa per gli sprinters e una tappa anche per i finisseur, corridori Matthews o Gilbert, se saranno usciti bene dalla prima crono, potranno indossare la rosa nel Gesù crebbe.

rest day

Image[/img]

Hi everyone, this is my first participation to a contest, I guess to not make too much mistakes. And sorry for my poor english.

maps/tours/view/9004

Here is a brief description of the Giro, in the next days I'll insert a description also of each stage in the track.
The giro d'Italia I intend to show you has, as specified, its start from Israel with three stages, including: one time trial, one on mixed terrain stage and a flat one.
Upon returning to Italy (day of rest in Bari on Monday) the South is explored: a flat stage from Bari to Foggia, then from Termoli the peloton will head to Potenza, with a breakaway-friendly stage. Then Calabria (Praia a Mare) will be reached with an almost flat stage. The next stage will end in Salerno, and will be one of the last for a period of time dedicated to sprinters. Particular attention must be paid be paid by both GC contenders and stage catchers to the stage ending in Sorrento, while the last stage of the week represents the first arrival on a mountain: Vesuvius, coming after a tour of Naples.
Second transfer to Venice, with time trial from Lido di Jesolo to Piazza San Marco and the first taste of Prealpi and Alpi. A good part of the stages is dedicated to the memory of the First World War: second stage of the week from Udine to Caporetto (theater of a resounding defeat of the italian Army), now part of Slovenia. Then the convoy of the Giro will head to Cortina d'Ampezzo with a simple stage for sprinters, one of their last chances. Then the Dolomites (other battles on their tops) will be on the shields, with an arrival on Passo Pordoi after Cibiana, Duran, Giau, Falzarego, Fedaia. Next, stage from Bolzano to Aprica, through Stelvio and a double Mortirolo: also the Stelvio was the set of a number of battles durnig WWI. The last stage of the week will end in Bergamo, on the route of the Giro di Lombardia.
Last week in central Italy, to show that even the Apennines are worthy of a final of the Giro. Rest day in Imola, then the peloton will head from here to Cagli, after a tough stage on the Marche's hills. From Gubbio (Umbria), then the riders will go through the dirt roads of Tuscany's Val d'Orcia; after that, a short stage up and down the Monte Amiata. No breathing stages, next is Terminillo. The penultimate stage is around Passo Lanciano (Blockaus) with arrival down in the valley, in Lettomanoppello after multiple climbs to the various sides of the mountain.
Grand finale in Rome, with digression on the Roman hills and return on the pavè of the magnificient Appia Antica: no relax for GT contenders: ambushes are still possible.

This is a hard Giro, I know, designed for a shrewd (and strong) rider. There is a molteplicity of stages, simple, not so much; long mountain, short mountain stages; hard uphill arrivals, "easy" uphill arrivals, downhill arrivals; hard slopes and easy slopes; two ITT: one pretty short and one pretty long (and for specialists).

Some details:
Total distance: 3422.94 Km
15 regions crossed: Puglia, Molise, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige, Lombardia, Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Umbria, Toscana, Lazio, Abruzzo.
2 foreign nations crossed: Israel and Slovenia.

Uphill arrivals: 4.
High mountain stages: 8; Uphill arrivalsin the high mountain stages; 4.
Mid-mountain stages: 5
Flat stages: 6
Individual time trial stages: 2; Kilometers of individual time trial: 69.38

Total GPM: 90
1 Cima Coppi (Stelvio):
Total 1st category: 13
Total 2nd Category: 15
Total 3rd category: 38
Total 4th category: 23

Have fun!

First week
Tuesday may 8th first Italian stage, almost entirely flat, ideal for sprinters
Image

Wednesday May 9th first climb arrival, Prati di Tivo, sky place in northern Gran Sasso. Relevant climb, almost 15 km at 6,6%. The typical "first week climb arrival", like the most common Campitello Matese or Monte Sirino. Classification will start taking a shape, the challenger for final win are expected to be separated by just a few seconds, but who is not in his best condition can get a relevant delay
Image

Thursday May 10th Stage mainly for finisseurs, it starts from Filottrano in tribute to Michele Scarponi, and it finishes on Romagna hills.

[

Image

Friday May 11th first contact with Alps with Mendola near the arrival. Difficult thinking to attack from final win pretenders, more reasonable a long distance attach where Mendola will select the attacker with better climb attitude or better condition.

Image

Saturday May 12th. “when the goin' gets tough . . . the tough get goin”. Six climbs, including the very hard Pennes (4 km at 8%) , and arrival to Alpe di Siusi, (11 km at 7%)

Image

Dettaglio del finale
Image

Sunday May 13th first week closes with its best. Four Dolomitics climbs, then Zoncolan (Does it need presentation? And it is the lowest in altitude of the six climbs) from Ovaro (the hardest side) followed by Crostis (16 km at 8%)

Dettaglio del finale

Tuesday May 15° we start celebrating WWI. From Redipuglia war memorial (that houses the remains of 100000 Italian soldiers killed in war) to Vittorio Veneto (place of the final battle that decided the war on Italian front), in one of the few completely flat stages

Image

Image

Image

Wednesday May 16th from Villa Giusti, near Padova, where the armistice was signed, another completely flat stage

Image

Image

Thursday May 17th half Giro time trial, completely flat, the great chance for time trial specialist to gain against climbers. Route in Cremona’s country, between Serio and Adda rivers

Image

Friday May 18th medium mountain stage, with Croce Serra e Joux. Ideal stage from outsiders attack, with pretenders to classification waiting for the weekend

Image

Saturday May 19th “tappone” in Western Alps. Beginning with San Carlo and Piccolo San Bernardo, French border is crossed to climb to Iseran (cima Coppi) and come back to Italy with Moncenisio and final climb, first time in Giro History (12 km at 8%). Here it is time to attack, path and length help to show both long-distance attitude and condition

Image

Sunday May 20th , Maybe the hardest one. After an easy start with only the small hill of Colle Braida, it is time of the hard Colle delle Finestre around the middle of the stage, followed by two middle difficulty climbs (Sestriere and Monginevro) for the final showdown with (again in France) Isoard e Agnello, and arrival after a downhill . Here, who find difficulties can lose dozens of minutes, and like yesterday long-distance runners are favorited, even if not pure grimpeurs

Third week

Tuesday May 22nd sprinter stage (Bocchetta from easy stage)

Image

Wednesday May 23rd climb time trial (9 km at 8%)

Image

Thursday May 24th open stage, last chance for sprinters but also ideal for long distance outsiders attack
Image

Friday May 25th Monte Carpegna, historical stage arrival, 7 km at 7,7%
Image

Saturday May 26th Appennini stage with Sasso Tetto at the beginning and Terminillo in the end. Not strongest as alpin stage, but after three week it can be hard enough for making a difference and reopen the game
Image

Sunday May 27th final stage, flat time trial crossing the most relevant parts of Roma and arriving at Stadio Olimpico

This is my version of the Giro d'Italia 2018 : maps/tours/view/8964

There are:
7 flat stages
6 medium mountain stages
6 high mountain stages
2 ITT

In total there will be covered 3591.63 Km.

My version for the Giro d'Italia 2018 countains 21 stages with start in Jerusalem and finish in Rome.

Important facts:
The rest days will be after stage 3, stage 9 and stage 15.
In addition to the stages in Israel, my Giro touches 17 italian regions:
Calabria, Puglia, Basilicata, Campania, Molise, Lazio, Abruzzo, Umbria, Marche, Toscana, Emilia-Romagna, Piemonte, Liguria, Lombardia, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Veneto.
Sicilia, Sardegna and Valle d'Aosta are not part of the race.
There are two stages which remember the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. These are the stage with finish in Lecco (16th stage) and Passo Pordoi (18th stage).
The Cima Coppi will be the Passo Pordoi.

The stages will be presented in the spoiler section:
Spoiler!
1st Stage - Jerusalem > Jerusalem: 11.08 Km - Individual Time Trial

My Giro d'Italia 2018 starts with an individual time trial of 11 km. The course is not pancake flat, it has some up and downs in the inner city of Jerusalem. The first time gaps between the GC contenders.

Image

2nd Stage - Jerusalem > Haifa: 228.31 Km - Medium Mountain

The second stage of my Giro is a medium mountain stage with tricky final. In the last 25 km there will be two KOM, where the final one will be easier, but still with maximum slopes of nearly 10%. The stage winner will probably be a rider who likes one day classics like Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Amstel Gold Race. Also the GC contenders have to be aware.

Image

3rd Stage - Haifa > Be’er Scheva: 198.12 Km - Plain

Third and last day in Israel. It will also be the first opportunity for the sprinters in this Giro. The first 80 km will be along the coast, then the riders will slowly change direction and go towards Be'er Sheva, where the finish line is set. Altough the slight uphill drag in the final 50 km the sprinter teams won't miss this opportunity.

Image

4th Stage - Reggio Calabria > Lamezia Terme: 203.67 Km - Medium Mountain

The first stage in italian territory, and it won't be easy. A typical Giro d'Italia medium mountain stage with many hidden difficulties. The first 30 km are flat before the first climb, which isn't really difficult with its 4% of average slope. After this climb there are 50 km of false flat, before we arrive to the climb of Vibo Valentia, a not to difficult 3rd category. With 70 km to go we reach the climb of Filadelfia, the most difficult of the day (7 km at 7.2%). From this point on there won't be much flat until we reach the finish line. The stage will probably be decided on the last two climbs, two hard muritos on narrow streets, both with slopes up to 20%. The GC contenders have to be extremely aware before this two KOM and always be in front of the main group, otherwise they risk to lose plenty of time. The stage win will probably go to a puncheur.

Image

5th Stage - Cosenza > Marina di Ginosa: 174.57 Km - Plain

Second flat stage of the race, and the first chance for sprinters on italian territory. After the only climb of the day, which is rather easy, the riders will go along the coast on wide roads. The only difficulty could be the wind, and so the top tier teams have to pay attention during the last 100 km of the stage.

Image

6th Stage - Matera > Benevento: 248.14 Km - Medium Mountain

A very long medium mountain stage brings the riders to the region of Campania. The riders will face rolling terrain and 6 climbs, none of them really difficult. Normally a typical breakaway stage, but we are in the first week and many probably want the pink jersey, so there should be a big fight. The stage could also be won by a sprinter who has a decent climb, but it will be difficult to control.

Image

7th Stage - Campobasso > Frosinone: 163.45 Km - Plain

Third chance for sprinters in this race, where the riders will roll to Frosinone, in the region of Lazio. Despite it's not pancake flat, the fast men shouldn't have problems to take this stage. Before the hard stage on Saturday the GC men are happy to rest a little bit, so there shouldn't be too much chaos.

Image

8th Stage - Civitella Roveto > Colle Bertone: 196.30 Km - High mountain

First real mountain stage of this Giro. After some hilly terrain in the first 100 km, the riders will climb Sella di Leonessa, a tough and long climb which will bring the riders to the easy Passo Lauturia. After a very technical descent the riders will start the last climb of the day, the Colle Bertone. This climb averages 6% on 17 km. The most difficult parts will be halfway the climb, so the ones who have to claim back time have to attack here. Those who want the stage win have to push hard already on Sella di Leonessa, because the last climb isn't hard enough to make big differences. It will be interesting to see what the top GC teams will try on this first real test.

Image

9th Stage - Amatrice > Porto San Giorgio: 182.65 Km - Medium Mountain

9th and last stage before the second rest day. After a hard day on saturday, the riders will face a very nervous stage with continous up and downs in the region of Marche. The start will be from Amatrice, a little place which was damaged hard by the earthquakes in 2016 and 2017, and the riders will have a minute of silence in thought of the nearly 300 deaths. After the first 20 km in slight descent, the riders will face the longest climb of the day, the Monte Rigo. After this one, the climbs will come one after the other and the riders have to be very attentive to not be caught behind, because on these narrow streets in Marche selection is created very fast. In total there will be 12 climbs, none of these impossible, but all very demanding and with some steep ramps. It will be an important day for GC, but also for the stagehunters, because there is plenty of terrain to attack.

Image

10th Stage - Gubbio > Città di Castello: 51.75 Km - Individual Time Trial

Second and last stage against the clock of this Giro comes right after the second rest day. Long ITT of 51,75 km where the riders will face mostly flat terrain. There are altough two easy climbs, the first at the second intermediate (2,8 at 3,5%), and the second at the third intermediate (3,8 at 4,7%). This is a stage for specialists, so they will try to win this stage. The lighter climbers will try to minimize the time gap to the more powerful GC guys, before they can take back time on the following 11th stage.
Crucial stage for the Giro win.

Image

11th Stage - Arezzo > Pavullo nel Frignano: 233.85 Km - Medium Mountain

Long and tricky stage after the individual time trial. 234 km after the start in Arezzo the riders will arrive to Pavullo nel Frignano, in the region of Emilia-Romagna. The most difficult km will be the last 110, where the riders will pass five categorised climbs. The most difficult of these is without any doubt the fourth one, the Passo del Lupo (17,5 at 6%). After a long descent the riders will ride towards Pianelli, a quite short and steep climb (4,9 at 9,2%). After that there is a short descent and some km flat before the riders will arrive to Pavullo nel Frignano. This stage could create some big problems for GC guys who are not on a good day, because of the lenght of the stage and because it comes right after the hard ITT.

Image

12th Stage - Pavullo nel Frignano > Fiorenzuola d’Arda: 163.59 Km - Plain

Transitional stage which brings the riders from the Apennines to the Po Valley. The first 70 km are quite difficult with 4 categorised climbs, where the hardest one is the short climb to Teneggia (2,75 km at 9,6 %). After this first part the riders will only face flat terrain before the the finish line. Potentially it could be a day for a breakaway, but the sprinter teams will try to hold this together.

Image

13th Stage - Piacenza > Alba: 171.07 Km - Plain

Typical pan-flat Giro stage trough the Po Valley, and last chance for the sprinters in the second week. Everything beside a bunch sprint would be a big surprise. The GC men will also be happy to have a little rest before two crucial mountain stages on the weekend.

Image

14th Stage - Barolo > Pieve di Teco: 217.25 Km - High mountain

First real test in the Alps in this Giro. It will be a hard and long stage with a total of 4 climbs. The riders will kick off in Barolo, known for the very popular wine. After a short hill right at the start, the riders will face 70 km with a constant light uphill drag before reaching the first climb to Quarzina (7,1 km at 8,5%). At km 109 the riders will reach Pieve di Teco, where 108 km ahead will be post the finish line. The riders still have to do 3 climbs, the most difficult of these is the Monte Ceppo (15 km at 7%). The last climb of the day is the Colle d'Oggia (14,2 km at 6,7%). After a quite technical descent the riders will finally reach for the last time Pieve di Teco. It will be a very important stage with no flat in the last 108km and so it will be a long day for everyone. Some brave GC contender could try a long range attack, the terrain is quite favorable.

Image

15th Stage - Fossano > Mottarone: 242.17 Km - High mountain

After a hard stage on Saturday, the riders will have another long day on the saddle, with 242 km in total. The first 170 km are almost pan-cake flat, and they won't for sure going full gas there, keeping in mind that the finale will be very tricky. After two 3rd category and one 2nd category climb, the best climbers will be happy about the hardest MTF until yet of this race. The Mottarone is 18 km long and averages 6,32 %. The last 12 km altough have an average gradient of 7,7 %. This climb could create decent gaps, in especially if some riders have tired legs from the stage before. In addition it's the last stage before the second rest day, so they wont't hold back anything.

Image

16th Stage - Monza > Lecco: 172.74 Km - Medium Mountain

First stage of the last week of this Giro, and it will be a hard one. After 50 km of flat terrain the riders will enter hellish 120 km until the finish with continuous up and downs. Only the last 8 km will be flat again. The toughest of these final 8 climbs will be the second-last, the well known Passo di Valcava (12,4 km at 6,9 %). It will be an important day for GC, because the whole stage is incredibly difficult to control for the teams. Gutsy riders can really gain back time here for the final win of the Giro. In Lecco, where the stage ends, the riders will also remember the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War, because the finish line is post right in front of the "Monumento ai Caduti", which was built between 1922 and 1926. The majestic monument, located on the lakefront where once there were barracks of Croatian prisoners, remembers the fallen soldiers of the Great War.

Image

17th Stage - Iseo > Vicenza: 165.86 Km - Plain

Short and rather easy stage after the "Mini Giro di Lombardia" of the day before. The first 130 km of the stage will be flat before the riders will hit the 3 GPM of the day. The second-last one will be the famous climb to Monte Berico. Via Costacolonna altough will be the toughest one, with 1,6 km at 8%. The final part of this stage is similar to the proposed route of the WCRR in 2020 in Vicenza. The favorites for this 17th stage will generally be classic riders and sprinters which can climb a bit. It's suited perfectly also for a late finisseur attack. Also the GC contenders have to be attentive, because the last climb is on narrow roads and positioning will be crucial. But the riders which will fight for the win of the Giro will be more focused to save energys for the last 3 crucial day in the Alps.

Image

18th Stage - Bassano del Grappa > Passo Pordoi: 199.86 Km - High mountain

Queen stage of this year's Giro. 200 crucial km will await the riders, and not less than 5 first category climbs. Already the first will be the most difficult one, the well known Monte Grappa. After the descent the riders will have the easiest 40 km of the day, with only flat and a 3rd category climb in it. The last 110 km altough will be brutal. 5 climbs will separate the riders still from the finish line, and they come one after the other without flat terrain. In succession they will face the Forcella Franche and then the mythical dolomitic climbs Passo Duran, Forcella Staulanza, Passo Fedaia and the Cima Coppa Passo Pordoi. The final decision about the stage winner can be made on everyone of these, but most probably on the steep sections of the Passo Fedaia, with its magnificient scenery and long hard straits. After the Fedaia they take a brief descent to Canazei where the final climb starts, the popular Passo Pordoi. Probably they will reach the finish line one at the time, everything else would be a shocker after a hard stage like this one. At the 2231 of the Passo Pordoi the riders will also remember the 100th anniversary of the Great War, which took place near the finish line. At the top of this final climb we find the museum of the Great War, and some 100 meters towards North-East there is the germanic monument of the Pordoi, which remembers and contains the remains of 454 Germanic soldiers and 8,128 Austro-Hungarian soldiers. The construction was finished in 1959.

Image

19th Stage - Corvara in Badia > Terento: 102.76 Km - High mountain

Shortest stage in this years Giro with 102,8 km. It will be a hard one, in especially because it comes right after the extremely hard dolomitic queen stage. This stage will also be the last mountain top finish in this race. This 102,8 km could be very important for the GC, because coming after a hard day and beeing so short, could incentivate attackers and gutsy riders who want to go all-in in order to win Il Giro. It will be very hard to control for the top teams, and there will for sure be a big battle to get into the breakaway. The 4 climbs are all relatively steep, the hardest one will be probably be the second, the Alpe di Rodengo, and the easiest will be the final one up to Terento. Mayhem time!

Image

20th Stage - San Candido > Paluzza: 159.31 Km - High mountain

Last mountain stage of this Giro and it will be a tricky one. After crossing the border at Prato alla Drava, the riders will face 90 km on austrian terrain, containing an easy climb and a long rolling descent, with several little bumps. After the Passo di Pramollo the riders will reach Italy again, with the Passo del Cason di Lanza which comes right after the descent of the further one. It is a pretty irregular climb with maximum gradients up to 18%. After the descent on narrow roads the riders will face the last GPM of this year's Giro, the Forcella di Lius, a short but steep climb with maximum gradients up to 17,8%. After the descent they will reach the finish line in Paluzza. It's the last opportunity to make back time so the climbers will try to make life difficult for the GC leader. The terrain is perfect for long-range attacks so it should be an entertaining last mountain stage.

Image

21th Stage - Civitavecchia > Roma: 105.13 Km - Plain

Last stage of this Giro edition and it will be a day for the sprinters, and maybe there will also be the final battle for the cyclamen jersey. After the last stage ending in Friuli-Venezia-Giulia the riders will reach Latium with the high-speed train Freccia. After 105,1 km the winner of the race will finally be decided, and the riders will be happy to reach Rome after hard 21 stages. The finish line will be post in front of the mythical Colosseum.

My Giro 2018: maps/tours/view/8972
Second week presentation

Image
stage 10: the Liege-Bastogne-Liege of this Giro, few km of flat, technical descents and brutal cotes, the arrival in genoa is the most spectacular of this Giro, cote de Righi is highly explosive in the first part and, probably, the descent will make more damage of the climb itself, plus there will be a 1km uphill not-cathegorized climb and the typical soft ascending arrival of Via Venti

Image
stage 11: miniature version of MSR with the addiction of Pompeiana
Image

stage 12: Image
First mountaintop finish, Colle della Fauniera will make the first cut between the Gc contenders, pure climbers will have to attack because a time trial is looming

stage 13
Image
another final for classic hunters, narrow roads, fast descent and uphill arrive, Phil Gil like riders are hungry

stage 14
Image
this is the turning point of the Giro, Susa-Sestriere is the most difficult time trial since the famous 5 Terre time trial of the 2009 Giro, Colle delle Finestre suits more the pure climbers but in the latter part Dumoulin Froome Porte or Nibali can make the difference if they are in a good shape
Image

stage 15
Image
final alpine day before the break, but after tremendous time trial, there will be a lot of surprises
in case of snow, the riders will be arriving in La Thuile by Tackling Colle san Carlo instead of the Mont Cenis-Iseran-Petit Saint Bernard combo

Image
Iseran will also be the Cima Coppi of this Giro

Et voilà

Image
Rest days after stage 3, 10 and 15.

15 regions touched: Calabria (Roccella Jonica, Cirò marina, SIbari), Puglia (Minervino Murge), Basilicata (Lavello), Molise (Bojano, Isernia), Abruzzo (Campo Felice), Lazio (Contigliano, Roma), Toscana (Arezzo, Sesto Fiorentino, Scarperia, Barberino di Mugello), Emilia Romagna (Monte Cimone, Collecchio), Liguria (Genova/Monte Gazzo, Genova/Pegli), Lombardia (Vigevano, Almè), Piemonte (Trofarello, Nichelino, Gattinara), Valle d'Aosta (Estoul), Trentino Alto Adige (Mezzana Val di Sole, Monte Zugna), Veneto (Monte Piana, Santo Stefano di Cadore, Bassano del Grappa, Grezzana), Friuli Venezia Giulia (Gradisca d'Isonzo, Monte San Michele, Valvasone Arzene).

The five race days of the last week (Rome stage excluded) are all dedicated to the memory of WWI; in the specific:

- Stage 16, Mezzana - Monte Piana: the Dolomites and Monte Piana, that was contested between the italian and the Austrian Armies. Today many remnants of the fierce fighting can still be found on the summit.

- Stage 17: Santo Stefano di Cadore - Nova Gorica: after the few kms the important KOM of Cima Sappada, where a museum on WWI is settled.
Moreover, the final of the stage follows the Isonzo river, that was the border between the italian and the austrian territories at the start of WWI.

- Stage 18: Gradisca d'Isonzo - Monte San Michele/Altopiano del Carso: a famous territory thanks to the italian poet Ungaretti, who dedicated to the village of San Martino del Carso one of its most greatest works; the poem is about the atrocity of WWI.

- Stage 19: Valvasone Arzene/Ponte della Delizia - Bassano del Grappa: The start will take place in front of a commemorative WWI plaque: the bridge was destroyed during the italian retreat together with the other ones, in order to make difficult the crossing of the river Tagliamento for the Austrian-German Army.
The stage will be decided on Monte Grappa, who represented the last defense for the Italian Army and the last obstacle for the Austrian one.

- Stage 20: Grezzana - Monte Zugna: Monte Zugna (or Coni Zugna), together with the most famous Passo Buole, is part of the mountain massif contested between the two armies during WWI.

In the spoiler the description stage by stage. Here the link to the Giro: maps/tours/view/8547
Spoiler!
PROLOGUE: JERUSALEM ITT, 7.8 km
Image
A less than 8 kms long time trial full of ups and downs will be the first stage of this Giro d'Italia. The route is very similar to the original one.

STAGE 1: BE'ER SHEVA - TEL AVIV, 174.6 km
Image
A stage for sprinters, with just one short and easy KOM after 60 kms and a final circuit of 9 kms in Tel Aviv.

KOM: Nehusha (4° Categoria, 347 m, 2.0 Km al 3.2%, Km 58.5).

STAGE 2: HAIFA - NAZARETH, 170.6 km
Image
The first hard stage of the race will take place during the third day, the last one in Israel: 6 KOMs before the finish line in Nazareth. After a hilly first part and a long discent to Tiberias, the route will go uphill with 3 3rd category and 2 4th category climbs.

KOM: Rameh (4° Categoria, 342 m, 2.7 Km al 3.9%, Km 72.2), Poriya (4° Categoria, 11 m, 3.2 Km al 6.6%, Km 115.6), Sharona (3° Categoria, 224 m, 3.1 Km al 8.0%, Km 124.8), Shibli/Mount Tavor (4° Categoria, 264 m, 3.0 Km al 6.7%, Km 136.7), Nazareth/Hakeramim (3° Categoria, 457 m, 5.6 Km al 5.6%, Km 154.5), Nazareth/Safafira (3° Categoria, 482 m, 3.8 Km al 6.2%, Km 166.7).

STAGE 3: ROCCELLA JONICA - CIRO' MARINA, 172.3 km
Image
Back to Italy, a quite easy stage all along the Ionian Sea coast.

KOM: Caminia (4° Categoria, 103 m, 2.1 Km al 3.9%, Km 57.4).

STAGE 4: SIBARI - MINERVINO MURGE, 214.1 km
Image
In Minervino Murge a long stage with an explosive finish, characterized by a very short and very hard "muro" before the final 2 uphill kilomiters to the finish line.

KOM: Matera (3° Categoria, 406 m, 6.7 Km al 4.2%, Km 126.4), Campanelli (4° Categoria, 391 m, 2.6 Km al 4.2%, Km 201.4), Minervino Murge (4° Categoria, 478 m, 2.0 Km al 4.6%, Arrivo).

STAGE 5: LAVELLO - BOJANO, 194.7 km
Image
The 6th stage presents a profile that looks suitable for attackers - there are just a few kms of flat terrain in the last 60 kms. The hard climb of Sterpara del Piano, with very high gradients in the last 2 kms, could be decisive.

GPM: Ascoli Satriano (4° Categoria, 452 m, 4.8 Km al 3.7%, Km 28.5), Valico di Motta Montecorvino (3° Categoria, 786 m, 10.1 Km al 4.1%, Km 106.9), Colle Ciocca (3° Categoria, 678 m, 11.2 Km al 4.0%, Km 143.6), Sterpara del Piano (3° Categoria, 896 m, 5.2 Km al 5.5%, Km 162.3).

STAGE 6: ISERNIA - CAMPO FELICE, 221.1 km
Image
In the longest stage of the Giro there could be the first gaps between the GC riders: the long final climb ends only 4.5 kms before the finish line in Campo Felice, after a hilly route all along the stage.

GPM: Valico di Pratola (3° Categoria, 929 m, 22.1 Km al 2.7%, Km 36.9), Madonna Pietracquarta (4° Categoria, 898 m, 3.8 Km al 4.2%, Km 121.5), Forca di Tornimparte (2° Categoria, 1351 m, 16.8 Km al 3.8%, Km 182.3), Valico di Campo Felice (2° Categoria, 1561 m, 13.2 Km al 5.6%, Km 216.4).

STAGE 7: CONTIGLIANO - AREZZO, 184.2 km
Image
On Saturday the sprinters should get another chance. However, the hilly first part of the race and the short climb to the "Fortezza Medicea" must not be underrated.

GPM: San Gemini (4° Categoria, 376 m, 7.2 Km al 3.1%, Km 42.7), Collevalenza (4° Categoria, 322 m, 4.1 Km al 2.9%, Km 62.6), Cerqueto (4° Categoria, 301 m, 4.5 Km al 3.0%, Km 93.9).

STAGE 8: SESTO FIORENTINO - SCARPERIA/MUGELLO CIRCUIT ITT, 44 km
Image
From Sesto Fiorentino to the Mugello Circuit with a route partially favourable to the TT specialists: it looks like the climb to Croci di Calenzano is the only altimetric difficulty of the stage, but all the route is full of short ups and downs.

STAGE 9: BARBERINO DI MUGELLO - MONTE CIMONE/PIAN CAVALLARO, 163.7 km
Image
Monte Cimone will host the first mountain stage of the Giro. The rest of the route is flat for most of it, with the KOMs of La Crocetta just after the start and Sestola just before the final climb to Pian Cavallaro, the highest point reachable on tarmac of Monte Cimone.

GPM: Crocetta (3° Categoria, 810 m, 9.1 Km al 5.6%, Km 10.3), Sestola (2° Categoria, 917 m, 12.1 Km al 4.9%, Km 139.8), Monte Cimone (1° Categoria, 1864 m, 17.9 Km al 6.9%, Arrivo).

STAGE 10: COLLECCHIO - GENOVA/MONTE GAZZO, 204.8 km
Image
The 10th stage is maybe the trickiest one: after the rest day, the riders will face 3700 meters of positive difference, across 207 kms and 5 KOMs including the final climb to Monte Gazzo, at the Santuario di Nostra Signora della Misericordia, just outside Genova, the capital of Liguria.

GPM: Montevaccà (3° Categoria, 793 m, 6.1 Km al 4.9%, Km 69.5), Passo del Tomarlo (2° Categoria, 1468 m, 10.3 Km al 6.8%, Km 86.0), Sella di Sant'Alberto (2° Categoria, 678 m, 6.0 Km al 7.4%, Km 157.9), Valico di Trensasco (3° Categoria, 388 m, 4.5 Km al 7.6%, Km 179.4), Monte Gazzo (3° Categoria, 372 m, 4.7 Km al 7.0%, Arrivo).

STAGE 11: GENOVA/PEGLI - VIGEVANO, 194 km
Image
After 3 hard stages, sprinters will be the protagonists in Vigevano. Three climbs in the first part of the race are followed by 120 kms of pure flat.

GPM: Passo del Turchino (2° Categoria, 528 m, 9.8 Km al 5.1%, Km 16.3), Cremolino (4° Categoria, 368 m, 2.9 Km al 6.1%, Km 46.9), Ricaldone (4° Categoria, 298 m, 2.2 Km al 5.1%, Km 66.3).

STAGE 12: VIGEVANO - TROFARELLO, 166 km
Image
A flat stage suitable for attackers or sprinters that are able to keep a high pace on climbs. Only 3 KOMs but many short hills, the teams of the sprinters won't have many chance to catch up attackers in the final.

GPM: Piovà Massaia (4° Categoria, 299 m, 1.2 Km al 4.9%, Km 97.0), Cinzano (4° Categoria, 480 m, 5.2 Km al 2.8%, Km 123.8), Sciolze (3° Categoria, 463 m, 3.6 Km al 5.9%, Km 137.1).

STAGE 13: NICHELINO - ESTOUL, 175.6 km
Image
The final three climbs Arlaz-Tzecore-Estoul will show the effective strength and weaknesses of each pretender to the pink jersey. It's the first mountain stage of the "tryptique", but there could already be heavy gaps.

GPM: Andrate (2° Categoria, 812 m, 6.8 Km al 8.3%, Km 88.9), Col d'Arlaz (2° Categoria, 1006 m, 8.7 Km al 7.1%, Km 128.0), Colle Tzecore (1° Categoria, 1592 m, 16.1 Km al 6.7%, Km 157.6), Estoul (1° Categoria, 1788 m, 8.4 Km al 7.6%, Arrivo).

STAGE 14: GATTINARA - ALME', 179.2 km
Image
A "Tour-de-France-ish" stage, with two big climbs placed 15 kms before the finish line. That last kms are in a gentle discent, with a few ups and downs - a terrain favourable to attackers. The last kilometers of Valico di Brumano, after the crossing of the village, have slopes at 15% with a maximum gradient around 20%.

GPM: Lipomo (4° Categoria, 410 m, 3.7 Km al 4.8%, Km 85.7), Galbiate (4° Categoria, 371 m, 2.9 Km al 4.7%, Km 108.8), Valico di Valcava (1° Categoria, 1320 m, 14.4 Km al 7.5%, Km 130.4), Valico di Brumano/Resegone (1° Categoria, 1158 m, 9.2 Km al 7.5%, Km 152.4).

STAGE 15: MEZZANA/VAL DI SOLE - MONTE PIANA, 216.3 km
Image
The WWI memorial week starts with the queen stage of the Giro: 216 kms, 6 climbs, 4 1st category (Cima Coppi on Giau), 6000 meters of positive gap and the first-time-ever finish on Monte Piana, the "sister" of Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

GPM: Passo della Mendola (2° Categoria, 1364 m, 12.5 Km al 4.5%, Km 49.5), Passo di San Lugano (2° Categoria, 1100 m, 15.9 Km al 5.3%, Km 91.3), Passo di San Pellegrino (1° Categoria, 1915 m, 11.6 Km al 6.4%, Km 132.6), Passo Giau (Cima Coppi, 2228 m, 15.7 Km al 7.8%, Km 179.1), Passo Tre Croci (1° Categoria, 1809 m, 8.8 Km al 7.1%, Km 204.6), Monte Piana (1° Categoria, 2190 m, 7.3 Km al 7.3%, Arrivo).

STAGE 16: SANTO STEFANO DI CADORE - NOVA GORICA, 189.4 km
Image
After 3 mountain days, here an easier but still tricky stage, with 2 hard climbs in the last 40 kms of the race. Probably early attackers will have a chance to win this stage.

GPM: Cima Sappada (3° Categoria, 1276 m, 9.2 Km al 2.7%, Km 15.5), Ravascletto (3° Categoria, 953 m, 6.7 Km al 6.0%, Km 41.7), Lig (2° Categoria, 612 m, 5.9 Km al 7.0%, Km 154.1), Vrhovlje pri Kojskem (3° Categoria, 376 m, 4.0 Km al 7.4%, Km 173.8).

STAGE 17: GRADISCA D'ISONZO - MONTE SAN MICHELE/ALTOPIANO DEL CARSO ITT, 32.9 km
Image
The last TT of the Giro has an incredibly tough route, with 33 kms full of short climbs and evocative passages all around the Altopiano del Carso.

STAGE 18: VALVASONE ARZENE/PONTE DELLA DELIZIA - BASSANO DEL GRAPPA, 188.8 km
Image
The mountain range of Monte Grappa is the main character of this stage: it will be the first time of the Mortirolo-like climb of "Salto della Capra" in the pink race, followed by two passages on the summit of Monte Grappa. More than 3000 meters of vertical gap in just 50 kilometers.

GPM: Monte Archeson/Salto della Capra (1° Categoria, 1430 m, 10.2 Km al 10.4%, Km 126.1), Monte Grappa (2° Categoria, 1662 m, 6.7 Km al 5.2%, Km 135.7), Monte Grappa (1° Categoria, 1658 m, 9.9 Km al 7.2%, Km 158.5).

STAGE 19: GREZZANA - MONTE ZUGNA, 136.9 km
Image
The stage of all or nothing: 136 kms of climbs and descents, with the gravel road on the top of Monte Tomba that follows the massif of "Lessinia". Not to be underrated the only climb of the stage that is not a 1st category, "Monte Cornetto", short but with slopes much over 10%.

GPM: Monte Tomba/Lessinia (1° Categoria, 1702 m, 24.4 Km al 5.6%, Km 32.5), Monte Cornetto (3° Categoria, 1470 m, 2.3 Km al 10.3%, Km 50.7), Passo San Valentino (1° Categoria, 1315 m, 15.6 Km al 7.5%, Km 93.6), Monte Zugna (1° Categoria, 1599 m, 17.6 Km al 7.9%, Arrivo).

STAGE 20: ROMA CIRCUIT, 118.6 km

Hi guys,
Here is my route for the contest: maps/tours/view/9156

The route contains 7 Flat, 5 Hilly, 7 Montanious stages, and two ITTs. It has starts and finishes in exactly 15 regions of Italy.
Image
I've tried to categorize the climbs like they are in the Giro, so only the Cima Coppi is categorized as HC on the profiles.

Image
The first stage is an ITT in Jerusalem, with some ups and downs - the final climb is short, but very steep.

Image
An easy flat stage for the spinters between two of the biggest cities in Israel.

Image
The third stage is a bit tricky: some harder climbs in the beginning of the stage, some easier ones in the end, it can be a good stage for a breakaway or for the puncheurs. The stage goes through the hills of North Israel, Kiryat Shmona is the northest city of the country.

Rest Day

Image
After a transfer to Sicily, here comes the first interesting stage for the GC riders: Caltabellotta is not the hardest climb of the race, but it's the first top finish; it can easily make some differences.

Image
Stage 5 goes from north to south in Sicily. It's hard to predict, but can be perfect for a breakaway.

Image
The first high mountain stage: 4 categorized climbs, the Portella Mandrazzi and the Maraneve are the first 1st category climbs of the race. So as yesterday, downhill skill can be a factor here.

Image
A long stage for the sprinters near the southern coast of Calabria.

Image
Another coastal sprinter stage, but it's shorter, and more hilly. The finish in Sapri will be beautiful.

Image
Stage 9 has the first really hard top finish: the very steep Madonna di Viggiano. A short and exciting stage before the rest day.

Rest Day

Image
Another high mountain stage starts this week, with a finish after a long hard climb in Campocatino. Key stage for the GC contenders.

Image
Stage 11 is probably going to finish in sprint, but the climb of Tolfa can couse some problems for some sprinters.

Image
A mini Strade Bianche in Toscana, with a finish in Montalcino - a short climb with more than 10% in average.

Image
Image
The next two stages were made for the sprinters. The Ravenna-stage has a 2nd category climb in the middle, and the Portogruaro-stage can be very windy.

Image
The last stage of this week is the long ITT in the forests of Doberdo, and with a finish in front of the WWI memorial in Redipuglia. The big chance for the riders like Dumoulin to gain some time against the climbers.

Rest Day

Image
The last week - as usually - goes through the Alps, with 4 very important stages for the GC guys. The first one has a finish in the easy climb of Val Formica, but the riders have to climb the Passo Sommo before it.

Image
Another mountaintop finish in the Passo del Tonale, in front of the WWI Memorial. Short stage with 2 hard climbs.

Image
After 2, and before another 2 key stages, this one is for the "Sagan-type" riders, with some short easy hills in Varese.

Image
The longest stage of the race, and probably the queen stage too. 3 really long, really hard climbs in Italy and Switzerland, more than 5000 vertical metres to climb with the Cima Coppi: the Col du Grand Saint Bernard (2465 m). The stage finishes in Aosta, after a long downhill.

Image
The last stage for the riders to seize the Maglia Rosa: a very short stage with 4 hard climbs in the valley of Aosta. The last top finish is in Valgrisenche, which hosted a stage finish in last years Giro Valle d'Aosta (technically that stage finished a bit higher, but there's not enough space for a Giro stage finish).

Image
The final stage is for the sprinters in Rome, with 3 easy categorized climbs to decide who gets the KOM jersey, and with a finish near the Colosseum. The stage uses the cobbled road Via Appia Antica, so some early attacks still can change things in the GC.

My Giro proposal deals with all of the following requirements.
Firstly, it features three stages in Israel with a stage finish in Jerusalem. Moreover, at any point during those three stages we enter Palestinian territory.
Secondly, we have stage starts and finishes in 15 Italian regions. Those are Liguria (Stage 14), Lombardy (Stage 16), Trentino-South Tyrol (Stages 18,19 and 20), Veneto (Stages 16,17 and 18), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (Stage 17), Emilia-Romagna (Stage 15), Tuscany (Stages 12,13,14 and 15), Abruzzo (Stages 4 and 11), Molise (Stage 4), Apulia (Stage 5), Basilicata (Stage 6), Calabria (Stages 6 and 7), Campania (Stages 7, 8,9 and 10), Umbria (Stages 11 and 12) and Lazio (Stage 21).
Thirdly, it ends in Rome.
Furthermore, it does not feature key points of the previous edition of the Giro.
Finally, it pays tribute to WW1 in stage 9 (Naples is the birthplace of Armando Diaz), stage 17 (It starts from the place where the armistice was signed and follows the course of the river Isonzo, where the Isonzo Front was located), stage 18 (It starts from Vittorio Veneto, where the Battle of Vittorio Veneto took place), stage 19 (The Second Battle of the Piave River started on the slopes of Passo del Tonale).
To balance the race between a Quintana and a Dumoulin-like rider there will be a very long (and very flat) individual time trial which I believe would help the latter make up to five minutes in the GC. To compensate that, we have a mixed ITT featuring Mount Vesuvio, but also some flat terrain before it, so the outcome is difficult to predict. In terms of mountain stages, I have gone for quality rather than quantity, as last year's Giro proved that climbers cannot make up all the time relying just on mountain-top stages without difficult terrain before the finish. There are just five mountain stages, but all of them feature at least 4000 meters of positive incline, and the last three have at least three First or Hors Category climbs with little flat terrain between them. The idea is that climbers can chip away 30 seconds to 2 minutes on most of these stages.

Giro 2018 #01
Eilat > Be’er Sheva: 229.41 Km
Image
We start with a long, mostly flat stage on the Israeli desert. The main challenge will be the heat, as it could catch some riders out. Otherwise it is a mass sprint.
GPM: Neot Samadar (3° Categoria, 449 m, 6.5 Km al 5.3%, Km 54.4), Shdema Junction (4° Categoria, 636 m, 4.5 Km al 5.3%, Km 122.4), Mitzpe Ramon (3° Categoria, 843 m, 7.3 Km al 4.8%, Km 146.6).

Giro 2018 #02
Ashdod > Haifa: 162.73 Km
Image
The second stage is much more interesting, as it features three climbs near the end, located on the slopes of Mount Carmel. Each climb is shorter and steeper than the previous one and there is little flat terrain between them. The last one is just 5 km from the finish line in Haifa.
GPM: Damon Junction (2° Categoria, 516 m, 10.4 Km al 4.5%, Km 134.9), University of Haifa (2° Categoria, 412 m, 5.1 Km al 7.6%, Km 147.1), French Carmel (3° Categoria, 213 m, 2.4 Km al 8.1%, Km 157.9).

Giro 2018 #03
Nazareth > Jerusalem: 165.49 Km
Image
The third stage is similar to the previous one. This one features a harder climb Ramat Raziel, just 20 km from the finish line. It starts with 2 km at over 10% gradient, followed by a flat third km and the rest has 6/7% gradients. It does not have a descent as such, just a downhill false flat, until we reach the final climb, which is just shy of 4 km long, with gradients of 6%. The top of the hill is just 6 km from the finish, and after that comes an undulating terrain towards the finish line in Jerusalem.
GPM: Ramat Raziel (2° Categoria, 737 m, 7.6 Km al 6.4%, Km 145.1), Kiryat HaYovel (4° Categoria, 776 m, 3.9 Km al 6.2%, Km 159.0).

REST DAY

Giro 2018 #04
Pescara > Isernia: 136.43 Km
Image
After the long transfer we have a short stage that includes a tricky middle part and a short climb near the end. The outcome of the stage is difficult to predict, as both breakaways, late attacks on the last climb and even a reduced sprint are possible.
GPM: Casacanditella (4° Categoria, 420 m, 9.8 Km al 3.3%, Km 29.1), Colle San Leonardo (2° Categoria, 599 m, 8.4 Km al 4.9%, Km 59.6), Valico della Forchetta (2° Categoria, 1262 m, 9.5 Km al 4.8%, Km 84.5), Colle Martino (2° Categoria, 682 m, 2.4 Km al 7.5%, Km 129.0).

Giro 2018 #05
Foggia > Altamura: 143.74 Km
Image
Short, flat stage, ideal for sprinters. The main difficulty for them are the last kms, as they have a 2/3% gradients, which makes it difficult to assess when to launch the attack.
GPM: Poggiorsini (4° Categoria, 464 m, 3.0 Km al 5.3%, Km 113.1).

Giro 2018 #06
Matera > Praia a Mare: 199.79 Km
Image
Most interesting medium mountain stage of the first week, as it features many climbs, particularly on the last 100 kms. The last two climbs are the most important. The first one, despite its misleading average gradient, has entire kms at over 10%, and the last one has 1,5 km at 13%. The last one's descent could also be decisive, as it is long, narrow and twisty.
GPM: Martelli (4° Categoria, 437 m, 8.9 Km al 3.6%, Km 18.6), Chiaromonte (4° Categoria, 651 m, 9.0 Km al 3.8%, Km 113.1), Fardella (4° Categoria, 894 m, 10.5 Km al 2.8%, Km 126.1), Preti (3° Categoria, 895 m, 8.1 Km al 4.9%, Km 147.1), Laino Borgo (2° Categoria, 724 m, 7.6 Km al 5.7%, Km 172.9), San Nicola (3° Categoria, 830 m, 4.3 Km al 6.1%, Km 179.9).

Giro 2018 #07
Praia a Mare > Salerno: 177.14 Km
Image
This stage, despite the early climbs, is destined to be a mass sprint, but the last km is tricky, with the final 0,5 kms at 7%.

Giro 2018 #08
Pompei > Vesuvio: 27.29 Km
Image
Important stage for the GC with a headline-grabbing departure and finish. From the Roman city of Pompeii to Ercolano we have 14 flat kms, perfect for a specialist like Dumoulin, but the last 13 feature the climb to Mount Vesuvio, the volcano that destroyed Pompeii, so in the end the strongest riders at that moment, regardless of whether he is a Quintana or a Dumoulin-like rider, will win.
GPM: Vesuvio (1° Categoria, 995 m, 13.0 Km al 7.5%, Arrivo).

Giro 2018 #09
Napoli > Sorrento: 178.14 Km
Image
First mountain stage of the Giro comes after the time trial. Most of it contains relatively minor climbs, but the last one is the mighty Monte Faito. It is a stage which is perfect to witness attacks going uphill, downhill, or even on the flat terrain after the last climb. If you think this stage is hard, wait until you see the other mountain stages.
GPM: Corpo di Cava (4° Categoria, 365 m, 10.6 Km al 3.0%, Km 54.7), Vallico di Chiunzi (2° Categoria, 636 m, 11.8 Km al 5.3%, Km 87.3), Cesarano (4° Categoria, 690 m, 2.9 Km al 5.3%, Km 93.0), Agerola (2° Categoria, 639 m, 13.4 Km al 4.6%, Km 118.7), Monte Faito (1° Categoria, 1023 m, 13.9 Km al 7.0%, Km 150.2).

REST DAY

Giro 2018 #10
Caserta > Avezzano: 162.05 Km
Image
After the second rest day comes a stage that is similar to the Milano Sanremo, as it features a Poggio-esque climb near the finish line in what is otherwise a very flat stage, which should favor sprinters.
GPM: Vaccareccia (3° Categoria, 508 m, 9.0 Km al 4.8%, Km 86.2), Madonna di Pietraquaria (4° Categoria, 898 m, 4.3 Km al 4.0%, Km 156.0).

Giro 2018 #11
Avezzano > Orvieto: 222.15 Km
Image
Long medium mountain stage littered with climbs along the way. Because it features an uphill finish some GC riders might want to pick up some seconds.
GPM: Fiamignano (4° Categoria, 986 m, 6.0 Km al 4.4%, Km 42.6), Cottanello (2° Categoria, 844 m, 9.0 Km al 4.9%, Km 101.8), Sant'Urbano (4° Categoria, 440 m, 8.2 Km al 3.3%, Km 135.2), San Mauro (4° Categoria, 372 m, 5.8 Km al 4.8%, Km 155.5), Melezzole (4° Categoria, 583 m, 6.3 Km al 3.7%, Km 177.2), Montecchio (4° Categoria, 730 m, 5.8 Km al 4.3%, Km 186.5), Colonnetta di Prodo (2° Categoria, 544 m, 8.5 Km al 5.2%, Km 208.1).

Giro 2018 #12
Orvieto > Empoli: 212.90 Km
Image
Second long stage in a row and this time it is difficult to characterize as despite not featuring any major climb it still has more than 3000 meters of positive incline thanks to the multiple short, rolling hills of Tuscany. It is a stage where both a breakaway or even a mass sprint are possible.
GPM: Fornoli (4° Categoria, 514 m, 7.0 Km al 3.6%, Km 91.6).

Giro 2018 #13
Lucca > Pisa: 55.59 Km
Image
The second time trial of this Giro is a specialist dream as it is as fat as an ironing board. Another headline-grabbing aspect of the race are the start and finish lines. The start line is located on the famous Piazza Anfiteatro in Lucca, and the finish line is next to the leaning Tower of Pisa.

Giro 2018 #14
Sarzana > Abetone: 164.62 Km
Image
The second mountain stage of this Giro comes, again, after a time trial. This one hardly has a single flat km, and reaches 4700 meters of positive incline. The most important climb of the day is San Pellegrino in Alpe, which is by far the most difficult climb of the day, and, hopefully, the scene of brave attack by riders like Quintana, who badly need to make up for lost time. After that comes Abetone, a well-known mountain-top finish where the riders who suffered on the previous climb will be severely punished, especially if they are isolated.
GPM: Fontia (4° Categoria, 358 m, 8.3 Km al 4.1%, Km 14.8), Spolverina (2° Categoria, 652 m, 11.4 Km al 5.2%, Km 32.3), Spicciano (3° Categoria, 577 m, 11.6 Km al 3.9%, Km 61.3), Passo dei Carpinelli (2° Categoria, 837 m, 7.1 Km al 5.3%, Km 78.9), Dalli Sopra (4° Categoria, 1030 m, 6.3 Km al 3.6%, Km 89.4), Passo dell'Orecchiella (2° Categoria, 1242 m, 10.1 Km al 5.0%, Km 105.8), San Pellegrino in Alpe (1° Categoria, 1620 m, 14.3 Km al 8.6%, Km 137.6), Abetone (2° Categoria, 1378 m, 11.0 Km al 5.5%, Arrivo).

Giro 2018 #15
Pistoia > Forlì: 214.67 Km
Image
If after 14 stages there is a clear leader, who has been the best at every stage, both in time trials and mountain stages, and looks like he could comfortably lead the race until the end, this is probably the stage he should fear the most. I have called it the "anti Chris Froome stage", as it has every characteristic a dominant leader in a dominant team should fear. First of all, the sheer amount of climbs makes it impossible for his team to control the race. This stage has more positive incline than all but one of the stages (5100 meters). Moreover, most of these climbs, particularly the last ones, have steep gradients that should favor attacks. All of this makes tactical attacks more important than just strength. There could be an important attack at any moment in the stage, and sooner or later some of them are going to work.
GPM: Passo della Collina (1° Categoria, 927 m, 16.1 Km al 5.2%, Km 16.5), La Guardata (3° Categoria, 894 m, 10.7 Km al 4.0%, Km 47.9), Passo della Futa (2° Categoria, 937 m, 7.1 Km al 5.3%, Km 71.5), Firenzuola (4° Categoria, 575 m, 2.3 Km al 6.6%, Km 86.2), Peglio (3° Categoria, 747 m, 4.0 Km al 6.6%, Km 91.7), Castelvecchio (3° Categoria, 743 m, 5.6 Km al 5.5%, Km 101.3), Orsara (2° Categoria, 528 m, 6.8 Km al 5.7%, Km 124.2), Pozzo (3° Categoria, 432 m, 4.9 Km al 5.6%, Km 135.7), Rontana (4° Categoria, 281 m, 3.7 Km al 5.1%, Km 148.1), Fregnanello (2° Categoria, 435 m, 6.4 Km al 5.6%, Km 159.7), Trebbio (2° Categoria, 563 m, 5.8 Km al 6.8%, Km 169.6), Montemaggiore (2° Categoria, 450 m, 4.5 Km al 7.1%, Km 183.2), Predappio (3° Categoria, 386 m, 2.2 Km al 8.3%, Km 192.4), Rocca Delle Caminate (4° Categoria, 356 m, 3.6 Km al 6.3%, Km 201.5).

REST DAY

Giro 2018 #16
Mantova > Abano Terme: 116.90 Km
Image
Very short medium mountain stage on the Euganean Hills with three climbs with similar features. All of them are very short, but all of them have entire kms at over 10%.
GPM: Calaone (3° Categoria, 219 m, 2.2 Km al 9.2%, Km 78.6), Monte Rua (2° Categoria, 334 m, 4.2 Km al 7.5%, Km 87.8), Castelnuovo (2° Categoria, 287 m, 3.2 Km al 8.1%, Km 99.5).

Giro 2018 #17
Padova (Villa Giusti) > Gorizia: 226.43 Km
Image
Before the final storm we have to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 with a stage that pays tribute to both the armistice and the Isonzo Front. The stage itself is very flat, but that climb near the end might avoid a mass sprint.
GPM: San Floriano del Collio (4° Categoria, 259 m, 2.5 Km al 7.3%, Km 218.6).

Giro 2018 #18
Vittorio Veneto > Selva di Val Gardena: 177.53 Km
Image
The first of the final three mountain stages feature three very well known climbs, Giau, Marmolada and Sella. Those who want to be brave and make up a lot of time will not even have to wait for the final climb, although the final climb is hard enough to see good attacks. As the finish line is not in a mountain top both ascents and descents are crucial to the outcome of the stage.
GPM: Passo di Giau (1° Categoria, 2220 m, 15.0 Km al 6.9%, Km 110.3), Passo di Fedaia (1° Categoria, 2078 m, 16.0 Km al 6.7%, Km 142.6), Passo di Sella (1° Categoria, 2224 m, 10.8 Km al 7.1%, Km 164.9).

Giro 2018 #19
Bolzano > Passo del Tonale: 198.96 Km
Image
The queen stage of this Giro features its two most important climbs in its history, Stelvio and Gavia. Before them, the climb of Salten/Il Salto will surely take its toll on the riders. Then, after some flat kms comes Stelvio, a climb where some brave riders might even try an attack. If they decide against, they still have Gavia. This side is not as hard as the other side, but it is still a very respectable climb and it will probably be the most decisive of this stage. Riders will have to watch out for its descent to Ponte di Legno, where the final climb begins. Those who suffered before reaching it will surely pay the price at the end of the stage with a huge time loss.
GPM: Salten/il Salto (1° Categoria, 1345 m, 14.8 Km al 7.2%, Km 15.4), Passo dello Stelvio (Hors Catégorie, 2756 m, 25.6 Km al 7.3%, Km 125.3), Passo di Gavia (1° Categoria, 2617 m, 24.8 Km al 5.7%, Km 171.9), Passo del Tonale (2° Categoria, 1872 m, 9.5 Km al 6.0%, Arrivo).

Giro 2018 #20
Dimaro > Rovereto: 186.22 Km
Image
The last chance to see changes in the GC is probably not a bad one, as this stage features more first category climbs than any of the previous ones. After 50 easy kms we reach Trento, and then the riders will climb the mighty Monte Bondone, after its descent comes another demanding climb, Serrada, which leads to the town of Rovereto. Then comes the two most important climbs, Monte Faé, which is the steepest of them all, should favor attacks. If there are not any, they still have one last climb where to attack, Bordala. After its descent we arrive in Rovereto, where the finish line is.
GPM: Monte Bondone (1° Categoria, 1641 m, 19.1 Km al 7.6%, Km 76.6), Serrada (1° Categoria, 1262 m, 15.6 Km al 6.9%, Km 122.6), Monte Faè (1° Categoria, 922 m, 8.4 Km al 8.9%, Km 152.6), Passo della Bordala (1° Categoria, 1251 m, 9.6 Km al 6.9%, Km 166.7).

Giro 2018 #21
Roma > Roma: 115.83 Km
Image
This stage is the same as in the real Giro. It is a short flat stage featuring a circuit around the city of Rome.
