I would like to challenge people to make a Grand Tour in the german speaking countries.

You must include the capitals of each country, so Bern in Switzerland, Vaduz in Liechtenstein, Vienna in Austria and Berlin in Germany.

The tour need to be 21 stages. Everything else is your choice.

I hope you would accept the challenge.

Deadline will be Sunday 24th of October 23.59

Hello there.
I'd also like to make my own tour of the German region. As a German this topic really caught my eye. Haven't started editing yet, but my plan goes as follows:

1st stage: Sylt > Kiel, flat
2nd stage: Hamburg > Bremerhaven, flat
3rd stage: Bremen > Bremen, ITT or TTT
4th stage: Bremen > Bielefeld, flat
5th stage: Münster > Aachen, flat/hilly
6th stage: ??? (Belgium) > Trier, hilly
7th stage: Trier > FAM, medium mountain
8th stage: FAM > Stuttgart, hilly
9th stage: Stuttgart > ??? (black forrest), medium mountain

Rest day in Ulm

10th stage: Ulm > Nürnberg, flat
11th stage: Nürnberg > München, flat/hilly
12th stage: München > ??? (Berchtesgaden region), high mountain
13th stage: Salzburg > Lienz, hilly
14th stage: Wien > Wien, ITT
15th stage: Villach > Zell am See, high mountain

Rest day in Innsbruck

16th stage: Innsbruck > Sölden, high mountain
17th stage: ??? > Vaduz, high mountain
18th stage: Zürich > Bern, flat/hilly
19th stage: Bern > ???, high mountain
20th stage: Oberwald > Nufenen, high mountain
21st stage: ??? > Berlin Brandenburger Tor

Details and profiles to follow,

Tim

Stage 1
Berlin - Alexanderplatz > Parkplatz Teufelsberg (ITT)

The first stage is a 21 kilometer timetrial inside Berlin. The route will take the riders past some of the tourist attractions of Berlin. The last two kilometers is on Teufelsberg, were there are a old listening station, the US. used in the Cold War. Now the walls are used tow paint graffiti. First it is up for 700 meters at 5.65%, and after that, there are a 1 kilometer descent with some tricky bends.

Image

Stage 2
Potsdam > Leipzig (Flat)

Stage 2 is a flat stage to Leipzig, the last city in Sachsen, were there are many cultural treasures. The city is also birthplace for the famous composer, Johann Sebastian Bach. The flat route would favor a mass sprint, but the stage is short, just 141 kilometers, so a strong breakaway could manage to hold the peleton behind.

Image

Stage 3
Halle (Saale) > Brocken (Hilly - MTF)

The first hilly stage and the first MTF is on stage 3. The stage will finish on Brocken, also know as Blocksberg, and has been connected with witches and devils. Before the last climb, there have been 3 other climbs, and the last 25 kilometer is all uphill.

Image
Image

Stage 4
Goslar > Hessisch Lichtenau (Hilly)

Stage 4 is another hilly stage. The 3 last climbs will all make the riders hit 10%. After the last climb the riders have 13 kilometers, half of them downhill.

Image
Image

Stage 5
Kassel > Frankfurt am Main (Flat)

Stage 5 could give one of the sprinters a victory in Frankfurt, the second biggest city in Germany. The 3 climbs in the middle should not prevent a mass sprint, but they could tire some sprinters, and give a suprising winner.

Image

Stage 6
Mannheim > Baden-Baden (Hilly)

Stage 6 will take the riders to the Schwarzwald. 5 categorized climbs, the second climb is the hardest, and carries the first 1st category label of this Tour.

Image
Image
Image

Stage 7
Achern > Denzlingen (Mountain)

Stage 7 is the first mountain stage of this Tour. With 3 category 2 and 3 category 1, this is a stage for pure climbers. The first half of the last descent is a bit tricky, but after that, there is no corners what so ever until the finish line.

Image
Image

Stage 8
Denzlingen > Hochblauen (Mountain - MTF)

Stage 8 has 5 climbs compressed into 100 kilometers. The last climb don't have a high overall percenteges, but there is still some hard kilometers.

Image
Image

Stage 9
Müllheim > Grenchen (Mountain)

Stage 9 will leave Germany and head towards Switzerland. The first HC climb will be in this stage. 7.2 Km at 10.6%. Before the HC climb, there have been two other steep climbs, and after it, there are one more steep climb, before a downhill finish, with some tricky bends.

Image
Image
Image

Rest day in Genève

Stage 10
Genève > Bern (Flat)

This stage should be antoher one stage for the sprinters. Another day with some climbs in the middle, but they shouldn't be fatal for the sprinters, there still should be able to sprint in Bern, the capital of Switzerland.

Image

Stage 11
Bern > Martigny (Hilly)

This is a stage for the breakaway. They climbs is to hard for the sprinters, and after the climbs, there are a 20 kilometer flat, before the finish. It would be suprising to see a GC rider attack, and use a lot of energy on the flat part.

Image

Stage 12
Martigny > Zermatt (Mountain)

Stage 12 heads into the Swizz Alps for a mountain stage. It is not a MTF but it is still up all the way in the last 35 kilometers to Zermatt, a beutiful skiing village at the foot of the Matterhorn.

Image
Image

Stage 13
Visp > Lugano (Hilly)

The first half of stage 13 is in the mountains, but the end is a punchy final around the Lago Maggiore and the Lago Lugano.

Image

Stage 14
Bellinzona > Malbun (Mountain - MTF)

Stage 14 leaves Switzerland and heads into Liechtenstein, with a finish up to the Malbun Ski Resort, the only ski resort in Liechtenstein.

Image
Image

Stage 15
Vaduz > Serfaus (Mountain)

After a start in Liechtenstein, the riders quickly get into Austria. The finish is in Serfaus, a part of the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski resort. The riders will first climb up to Fiss, were there will be 3 kilometers of flat, berfore the finishline.

Image
Image

Rest day in Serfaus

Stage 16
Ried im Oberinntal > Oberammergau (Hilly)

Another stage for the breakaway. The climbs is still to hard for the sprinters, and the finish is in Oberammergau, the town their is famous for it's once-a-decade Passion Play in the Passion Play theater. The finish is flat, and there are no places for a GC rider to attack.

Image

Stage 17
Garmisch-Partenkirchen > Gletscher Arena Sölden (Mountain - MTF)

Stage 17 start in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the host city of the New Year ski jump. The riders will start outside the ski jumping arena and head to Austria for two HC climbs and a steep and long finish to Gletscher Arena Sölden, the highest point of this Tour. This is obviusly the Queen Stage.

Image
Image

Stage 18
Innsbruck > Kitzbüheler Horn (Mountain - MTF)

Stage 18 start in Innsbruck, and heads through the valley to Zillertal Arena. There they will take the Zillertaler Hohenstraße, and after climb to Gerlos. The finish is another steep, but not as long climb, to Kitzbüheler Horn.

Image
Image

Stage 19
Kitzbühel > Salzburg (Hilly)

The last chance for a breakaway chance is on stage 19. The route goes to Salzburg past the Zeller See, and is to hard for the sprinters, but still to easy for the GC. The finish in Salzburg will be on the Kirchplatz, underneath the Fortress.

Image

Stage 20
Seewalchen am Attersee > Sankt Pölten (Flat)

This is a traditional flat stage. Some early climbs, but flat all the way to the finish. This stage gives the sprinters a chance for a win, and the GC can rest before the descising ITT.

Image

Stage 21
Schloss Schönbrunn - Wien > Stephansdom (ITT)

The ITT will start with some climbing in the Wienerwald, before a flat and urban ITT in the last kilometers. The riders will bike past many tourist attractions, and will finish outside the Stephansdom.

I had fun creating this Deutsche Völker Tour. I tried to talk about my passion for the Second World War there by using several Nazi concentration camps as places of departure or arrival and various other small allusions to the history of the XXth century (Berchtesgaden, Potsdam, .. . etc).

I don't think I would have time to give a full presentation but I hope you like it!

Here's my German Tour.
I choose to use the two most important cities to host start and the finish of the Tour. In Wien we have an TTT to start the tour while Berlin will host the ITT in the stage 20 and the very last stage, for a massive sprint.

Deutschland will host 11 stages (from S3 to S11) and the start of stage 12;
Osterreich will host the start of stage 3, the first two stages and stage 18 and 19 in which probably GC will be defined;
Suisse will host the finish of stage 12, 4 (almost) complete stages (fro S13 to S16 - that runs the last 4kms in Deutschland) and the start of stage 17, the only one that will cross also Osterreich before the last 50 kms in Liechtenstein and the MTF near Vaduz.

In the tour we'll have 8 plain stages (even if stage 9 could be consider MM), 7 Medium montain stages (with 3MTF), 4 hign mountain stages (with 3MTF), 1 TTT and 1 ITT.

Saturdays and Sundays I try to draw stages that can be very spectacular:
- Stage 1 TTT across Wien;
- Stage 2 is the first MTF even if is just a MM stage;
- Stage 8 is the longer stage with a final circuit with a short but steep climb to repeat 3 times;
- Stage 9 pay tribute to Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit;
- Stages 15 and 16 are the two first mountain stages;
- Stage 20 ITT across Berlin to define GC
- Stage 21 is set to the final parade

Here's the stages:

1 TTT Wien - Wien Wien - Museumsplatz > Wien - Rathauspark 20.33 Km
2 MM Sankt Polten - Linz Sankt Polten > Linz (Postlingberg) 190.23 Km
3 Plain Salzburg - Munchen Salzburg > Munchen 159.00 Km
4 Plain Augsburg - Nurnberg Augsburg > Nurnberg 182.42 Km
5 Plain Weiden in der Oberpfalz - Zwickau Weiden in der Oberpfalz > Zwickau 170.16 Km
6 Plain Dresden - Leipzig (Ostalgie Stage) Dresden > Leipzig 153.92 Km
7 MM Halle - Braunlage (Warmburg) Halle > Braunlage (Warmburg) 177.54 Km
8 MM Einbeck - Hessisch Lichtenau Einbeck > Hessisch Lichtenau 248.85 Km
9 Plain Koln - Nurburgring Koln > Nurburgring 162.49 Km
Rest day in Koblenz
10 MM Koblenz - Frankfurt am Main Koblenz > Frankfurt am Main 169.70 Km
11 MM Heidelberg - Pforzheim Heidelberg > Pforzheim 182.82 Km
12 MM Freiburg im Breisgau - Solothurn Freiburg im Briesgau > Solothurn 176.46 Km
13 Plain Biel - Bern Biel > Bern 160.24 Km
14 MM Bern - Beatenberg Bern > Batenberg 197.62 Km
15 HM Montreux - Zinar Montreux > Zinar 215.51 Km
Rest day in Luzern
16 Plain Luzern - Kostanz Luzern > Kostanz 133.08 Km
17 HM Sankt Gallen - Vaduz (Malbun) Sankt Gallen > Vaduz (Malbun) 138.68 Km
18 HM Bludenz - Timmelsjoch/Passo del Rombo Bludenz > Timmelsjoch/Passo del Rombo 176.60 Km
19 HM Solden - Mayrhofen Solden > Mayrhofen 224.09 Km
Trasfer from Innsburk to Berlin in the evening; stage 20 will start in the late afternoon
