Giro d'Italia 2018 (Cat. 1, deadline on 4/5)

Post by emmea90 »

Contest #2 - Giro d'Italia 2018
The first GT contest (Cat. 1) of the year will, of course, be on Giro d'Italia. Why I'll open it so early? Because drawing a GT is not for all and i want to give you three months to do it (at least say thanks)

The contest will be about redrawing the 2018 Giro d'Italia. That will mainly means
- You have to keep the start from Israel. You can change the starting points and cities but you have to pass on West Jerusalem and you cannot go in Palestinian territories for safety reasons.
- You have to end it in Rome
- You cannot repeat finals or key parts of stages of 2017 real race
- You have to put a stage start or a stage finish in at least 15 different regions
- 2018 is 100 years after WWI end, so you have to remember it in at least two stages

Opposite from the other contests, you can have a maximum of TWO routes submitted for this one

The Giro should be balanced, offering a "Dumoulin" and a "Quintana" the same chances to compete for the maglia rosa.

The Deadline will be on 4/5, when the first rider of real Giro d'Italia will start his ITT

You must submit your routes in this topic submitting the link. As stated in general presentation, you can submit from 1 to 3 routes. You can use this topic also for asking the question - we can answer question about climb / road / finish praticability but we won't answer to anyone's questions in private, only in this topic.

Everyone who will present the route also posting in the topic profiles and descriptions in this topic will start the voting phase with 3 points bonus

Good luck anyone

-------------------

In Italian:

Il contest verte sul ridisegnare il Giro 2018 con queste condizioni

A) Mantenere la partenza da Israele, senza sconfinare in altri stati o territori palestinesi. Si possono cambiare le città ma bisogna passare da Gerusalemme
B) Bisogna finire a Roma

My Giro 2018

stage 16 Image

the longest stage of this Giro connects two city that hosted the world championship in the past, starting from Varese (Piazza Montegrappa is well known by italian fans), the stage will touch the famous "ippodromo" and then the route will head the Pianura Padana, the final part is tricky, like the one in Genoa, Torricelle and via Nazareth will set on fire the puncheurs while the few sprinters left will have to hang on or, if you're Matthews or Sagan or Trentin, to counterattack

Image

Image

stage 17 Image
this stage is dedicated to the turning point of WWI, Vittorio Veneto is the place where Italy defeated Austria once for all, will the ciclamino jersey leader distance his rivals once for all too?

stage 18 Image *the previous stage loaded was corrupted so here's another different one
another stage dedicated to WWI Starting from San Vito al Tagliamento the stage follows the frontline of the conflict and its famous rivers like Tagliamento and Piave, the finale is set in the Dolomiti Bellunesi, theatre of the "Guerra Bianca" between Austria and Italy, the Misurina-3cime combo will shake the Gc for sure and the riders will suffer the slow burning but constant ascending of the previous kilometres
Image
Image

stage19
60 km of battle, the road to Brixen is hard and full of climbs like Wurtzjoch and Lusonberg

Image
Image

stage 20
It's queen stage time!
101 km, 3 2kmetres monsters, the stage will finish in Austria to celebrate the 100 peace between the 2 nations, but there will be war from the beginning between the Gc contenders, the last one, we won't have any GS winner at the Rettenbachgletscher but we will have a GT one!
Image

Plane from Innsbruck to Rome

stage 21
Image
the final stage isn't so easy, the course will be neutralized in the final circuit but before there's 2 cathegory kom and 2 fourth ones, this stage is designed like a road point race, the multiple print will give some points for the ciclamino jersey, no bonus seconds

Here is my Giro:

maps/tours/view/8989

3 stages in Israel,
1)it starts with a 12 km ITT in Nazaret, with a final climb.
2)Then nervous stage in Jerusalem, with a final circuit and two short climbs.
3)Third Israeli stage ending in Tel Aviv without any KOM and an easy final for sprinters.

Rest day and transfer to Italy, in Brindisi, the old Roman Oriental Gate.
4) The Brindisi / Matera stage is mostly flat, it goes through the two seas of Taranto, and has a steep climb to Mettola. A final short climb brings to Matera, where a classic rider can win anticipating the peloton.
5) The day after the stage starts from Policoro and ends in Paestum, in front of the magnificient greek temples. Several climbs, some long, some tough, will encourage a battle for a break and the pink jersey.
6) From Giffoni will start the first stage with a final climb. It will be a very hard day, with three major climbs, the beauty of the Matese plateau, and the climb to Campitello, where Berzin in 1994 took a clear victory on Indurain.
7) The day after will be easy, and will bring the race to Abruzzo. Some climbs at the beginning for those fighting for the Blue Jersey, but then a flat ending with a short climb before Roseto, will open the doors to an end for sprinters.
8) On Saturday the Pink Race will visit the places of the 2016 earthquake, a short but difficult stage, with the beauty of the Monte Vettore and the hard final climb to Frontignano.
9) Sunday, a very nervous stage with two unpaved climbs in the Marche, and the end in Cingoli: possible day for attacks and traps also for the big names.
Monday rest day.
10) On Tueasday the race will start from assisi and finish in Firenze: this is the route that Gino Bartali was riding to carry fake documents to Jewish people to allow them to fly Italy during WW II. Good chances for breaks and sprinters.
11) Very long and difficult day throughout the appenine, with Vetta le Croci, Passo Futa and other climbs, bringing the race to Sassuolo. A day for breaks and traps.
12) A day along the Delta of the Po River, Chioggia, and the Adriatic sea. An easy sprint in Jesolo, after a day without difficulties.
13) 46 km ITT from the biggest memorial of WW I in Italy, Redipuglia, to Trieste. A difficult climb in the middle, and long straight roads to go fast.
14) Second day commemorating WW I, The race will start from Nova Gorica, in Slovenia, and will follow the Isonzo, the front between Italy and Austria in 1915. Two climbs will bring the race back in Friuli, then Sella Chianzutan and the impossible long and difficult Monte Crostis. Difficult descent, and the climb to Fusea. The last 10 km are flat and bring the survivors to Tolmezzo, the capital of Carnia Alps.
15) The dolomiti stage this year will start in Auronzo di Cadore and after the Cibiana and the Staulanza will go to the very hard Passo Fedaia (Serrai di Sottoguda route). The final 6 km will make the difference, 10% average, 18% max. Short descent, Passo Sella, and Passo Gardena, for the finish line in Colfosco.
Monday, rest day.
16) Tuesday the third day commemorating WW I, form the memorial of Nervesa, to the Memorial of the Pasubio, a long climb similar to the Col du Glandon, several easy and several hard climbs, to the top. In the middle a climb to the Salto della Capra and the Memorial of the Monte Grappa, the climb to the memorial of Asiago, the climb to the Fort Campolon - probably the most important climb of the day, which precede the finish on the Pasubio.
17) Wednesday, an easy stage to Treviglio, in front of the Bianchi factory.
18) From Abbiategrasso the race wil go thorugh the beauty of the Parco del Ticino, down to Piedmont. A wine stage dedicated to Monferrato and Langhe, with several climbs short and tough around Alessandria, Ovada and Acqui Terme.
19) From Savona will start the queen stage: Tetti di Montezemolo and little climbs around Cuneo will kill the legs of the domestiques. The Piatta di Montemale will introduce the dreadful Colle della Fauniera. A very long and difficult descent will bring the cyclists to the clomb of the Madonna del Colletto. 10 final flat km will lead the race to Entracque.
20) the day of the show down: Montoso, 10 km at 10% average, the easy sestriere, and the 6 km of the Jafferau to decide the Giro winner.
21) Final circuit around Rome, Colosseo, Circo Massimo, Vatic city, Piazza del Popolo, Trinita' de' Monti and final sprint at the Fori Imperiali, in front of the Colosseum.

60 km ITT total
4 final climbs.
3 other high mountain stages.
some stages for sprinters, some for the breaks, and Cingoli, Paestum, Sassuolo and Acqui Terme, very hilly, open also to attacks coming from the big names.
One stage with Strade Bianche
3 stages commemorating WW I
1 stage commemorating the Shoa and Bartali
16 regions will be touched.
Israel and Slovenia as extra Italy stages.
The beautiful start in Nazaret, and the conclusion in Rome.

Enjoy!

Fantasy Giro d'Italia 2018 by marco08

My Giro has two stages in common with the real Giro d'Italia 2018, the first stage in Jerusalem and the last one in Rome. The route is 3.493 km long and there is a stage start or a stage finish in 17 of the 20 italian regions: Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardia, Marche, Molise, Piemonte, Puglia, Sicilia, Toscana, Trentino-Alto Adige, Umbria, Veneto.

There are 7 flat stages, 6 medium mountain stages (1 with top finish), 6 high mountain stages (4 with top finishes) and 2 individual time trial stages.

Image
maps/tours/view/8797

In the 17th stage Dervio-Peio, the Giro will cross two WWI historical sites involved in the so-called White War: Passo del Tonale and Peio Paese.

Also 18th stage Malè-Bassano del Grappa will remember the 100 years after WWI end, in fact the route will pass in the Altopiano di Asiago and on Monte Grappa).

The 19th stage Feltre-Tre Cime di Lavaredo will be the queen stage of this Giro d'Italia and the last chance to attack for the climbers. The stage will arrive on the top of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo climb, which was a border place during the WWI.

20th stage Dobbiaco/Toblach-Fogliano Redipuglia will pass in Sappada, next to the main source of the Piave, that is thus called in Italy Fiume Sacro alla Patria. The route will arrive in Fogliano Redipuglia near to the Redipuglia War Memorial, before the trasfer in Rome for the last stage.

Post by nat63 »

Here is my "percorso" for my Giro ! maps/tours/view/8296

1- Jerusalem > Haifa **
First stage for sprinters able to pass little hills !
2- Haïfa > Tel Aviv *
Powerful sprinters should win this flat stage (windy stage !)
3- Tel Aviv- Marina > Tel Aviv- Rothschild Bvd ** 29.16 Km
First real gap will be created after this TTT, not long but such technical that will let the chance to good rouleur to wear the famous "Maglia Rosa" (and gain an advantage before the hilly stages)
4- San Severo > Maniago Monte Lugo ** 202.72 Km
A quite rolling one, for a strong adventurer or a reduced sprint
5- Cassino > Guardiagrele **** 205.61 Km
The 40 last km will decide the first ranking of the leaders ! They can early gain time they lost 3 days ago in the Passo Lanciano or Muro di Guardiagrele ( https://www.google.fr/search?q=muro+di+ ... DW90QfuRpM: ) :65:
6- Marina di Montenero > Falconara Marittima * 238.83 Km
another long stage with risk of echelons !!!
7- Chiaravalle > Filottrano *** 169.21 Km
In order to celebrate Michele Scarponi, what better idea than organizing a ( HARD) stage all around his home at Filotranno ! Ciao Michele !
8- Jesi > Città di Castello ** 175.80 Km
A breakaway could manage to cross the finishline before !
9- Città del Castello > Siena *** 199.53 Km
This year, Strade Bianche offers a show we'll never forget ! As the Tour de France's cobbled stage, white road sectors could bring some moments of madness since some Strade Bianche's sections are followed, with a finish in Siena after the terrible "Via Santa Caterina" !
10- Firenza > Albano Terme ** 233.49 Km
A treacherous day where echelons, or the slope (>15%) of the last ascent, can make a such undecided race.
11- Mestre > Triest *** 191.80 Km
The punchers stage, for guys that don't matter the general classification ( the last wall -3 km al 11%- is crossed third) !
12- Kobarid > Gorizia **** 59.15 Km
Let's commemorate the WW1, especially in Italy where thousands of soldiers died during the 12 Isonzo battle (1915-1918 along the Isonzo river). So, this huge ITT will start from Kobarid (the font line during Isonzo battle, that is now in Slovenia) and run along the Isonzo river on its major part. However, this 'll not be a flat ITT because two climbs will offer the possiblity to climbers to lose the less time as possible !
13- Gorizia > Vittorio Veneto * 124.98 Km
A short and totally flat stage, which arrive in Vittorio Veneto (and will pass in front of his museum), a historic place, where italian troup manage to defeat Austro-Hungarian ones ! The armistice, conceded by Austro-Hungarian marked the end of WW1 for Italy !
14-Belluno > Ortisei ***** 151.55 Km
A short tapponne, the 4 climbs are hard enough to push climbers to regain some time at the GC, as the hardest ascent (Passo Fedaia) is passed first !
15- Ortisei > Arco ***183.13 Km
This time, a breakaway must be able to win the stage, as its begining is not too hard, even if last Passo could be a springboard for riders far way on the GC ! The technical descent could also create some gap !
16- Madonna di Campiglio > Aprica ***** 176.46 Km
After a rest day, let's starts with a monumental stage which will pass Passo Tonale, Gavia (another Cima Coppi since it will commemorate the Battle of San Matteo, which, until the 1999 Kargil war, has been the highest battlefield in modern warfare history, where too many soldiers died too ...), and the famous Mortirolo-Aprica sequence !
17- Sondrio > Biella 209.59 Km **
The 17th is a transition one from the Dolomite to reach the Piedmontese alps !
18- Pont-Saint-Martin > Oulx **** 199.50 Km
Great show is to come at the ned of the day where another well-known sequence could see the favourites attack, or crack along the Finestre and its white roads !
19- Oulx > Colle di Sampeyre *****137.86 Km
That is the last opportunity to gain a great gap ! The riders will reach the french border and the Agnel (Cima Coppi)-Sampeyre sequence must be decisive ! This stage will be dynamic because short and without a flat meter !
20- Cuneo > Genova Pegli *** 173.92 Km
If the Gc is fixed, a breakaway of strong riders (who may try to enter in the Top 10) should dispute the win, especially in the Monte Beigua hard enough to cause gaps ! Otherwise, leaders must use thismedium mountain day to take the risk or lose their chance to win (the final is like ToTA one this year -Mendola-Palade- that offer us a great show) !
21- Roma- Piazza Navona > Roma- Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore *
To inspire peace and unit the worlds -religious- communities, instead of divising them, Rome will host the traditional last criterium !

Hi! This is my "Giro d'Italia 2018": maps/tours/view/9055

Description:

This Giro d'Italia 2018, characterized by the first time in the history of a departure outside the European borders, will spend its first three days in Israel: after a Team Timetrial that will be run in Jerusalem, the group will arrive in Tel Aviv, at the end of a stage for sprinters, the third day the arrival in Haifa will feature a short climb in the final.
Back in Italy, after the first rest day, two stages will follow for sprinters between Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia.
The sixth stage, with arrival in Tramonti will be the first to be able to really move, even if with short gaps, the ranking, while the next day we will have the first real uphill arrival, on the Terminillo.
The eighth stage will see the riders start from Montepulciano to face a time trial of about 32 km, with a slight final ascent to Cortona.
The ninth stage will be characterized by the ascents of Monte Catria and Monte Petrano, on which the arrival will be placed.
The day after will the second rest day
After a stage of transfer as the tenth, the eleventh will start from Breme (PV) to get to Barolo (CN): 200km with very little plain, where the riders will face the short but continuous climbs that characterize the Langhe and Monferrato (a little Liege).
We will move to Sanremo, arriving in via Roma, from which then will start the fearsome stage with arrival on Monte Argentera: an alpine stage in which the riders will face more than 6000m in altitude over 240km.
The next day we will arrive in Courmayeur after having faced many of the roughness of the Aosta Valley, one above all: the Colle San Carlo.
The fifteenth stage is renamed the "Lakes' Stage": in fact, it will touch Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano, Lake Como, Lake Iseo and Lake Garda.
After the third and last rest day, we'll have the sixteenth stage, which will be the first stage of re-enactment of the centenary since the end of the First World War: it will arrive, indeed, to Redipuglia and riders will also pass by the military sanctuary of Fagarè.
A crucial day will be the seventeenth stage, in which the riders will be engaged in a challenge against time from Monfalcone (place of re-enactment) to Trieste: 57km.
Eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth stage will definitely decide the name of the winner.
The first of the triptych includes an arrival on Mount Crostis after a hundred flat kilometers from the start, located in Kaporid.
On 25 May the most classic of the Dolomite coppers will be tackled: from Vittorio Veneto to Passo delle Erbe: meanwhile Forcella Staulanza, Passo Falzarego, Pordoi, Sella and Gardena are just some of the roughness that the runners will have to face along these 211 long kilometers.
The last stage of the triptych includes, in order, the climb of Stelvio (Cima Coppi), Gavia and Tonale, before climbing the ramps of the final climb: the Campo Carlo Magno Pass.
The last stage will end in Rome at the foot of the monument to the Unknown Soldier, to worthily conclude the commemoration of the fallen of the Great War, after a series of intermediate sprints placed inside the Eternal City.

-Stage 1 (Jerusalem TTT)
Image
Here we are with the Big Start: a 18km Team Time Trial that will see the riders face the tortuous streets of the centre of Jerusalem. The stage is not totally flat

-Stage 2 (Jerusalem-Tel Aviv)

-Stage 7 (Avezzano-Monte Terminillo)

If yesterday GC didn't move, then today it will, or, at least we'll see who can't win the Giro
KOMs: Ovindoli (2nd Category, 1372 m, 13.4 Km at 4.9%, Km 22.9), Monte Terminillo(1st Category, 1661 m, 15.3 Km at 7.4%, Arrive).

Rest day

-Stage 10 (Rimini-Modena)
Image
Flat transfer stage: occasion for sprinters

-Stage 11 (Breme-Barolo)
Image

KOMs: Diano d'Alba (3rd Category, 436 m, 7.1 Km at 3.8%, Km 187.6), Barolo (4th Category, 279 m, 2.8 Km at 2.4%, Arrive).

Re: Giro d'Italia 2018 (Cat. 1, deadline on 4/5)

Post by CaramelMou »

I hope it's not too late because the deadline on the main menu is 5/5 and i did not open this subject to avoid watching all the tracks.

Here is my Giro (maps/tours/view/9147) : 6 flat stages, 4 hilly stages, 8 medium mountain and mountain stages, 3 itt (1 prologue, 1 flat itt and 1 semi mountain itt) for a total of 3397 km. Fifteen regions host a stage start or a stage finish in Italy (Basilicata, Puglia, Molise, Abruzzo, Lazio, Umbria, Marche, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Trentino-Alto-Adige, Lombardia, Piemonte, Liguria, Toscana).

I forgot the rest days : the first one is obviously after the three stages in Israël, the second one if after the ninth stage (Gubbio - Chiesanuova) and the last one is after the fifteenth stage (Sondrio - Bergamo)

Stage 1/Prologue : Jerusalem - Jerusalem
A flat prologue inside Jerusalem with some curves.
Image

Stage 2 : Jerusalem - Beer Sheva
A flat stage starting in Jerusalem and going to the south of Israël, ending in Beer Sheva. First opportunity for the sprinters to catch a stage win but also to get the pink jersey if the did a good prologue.
Image

Stage 3 : Tel Aviv - Haïfa (Mount Carmel West)
A slightly hilly stage with a strong uphill finish (2,4km at 9%) on Mount Carmel which was climbed from another side 20km before the finish line.
Image

Stage 4 : Matera - Foggia
The first italian stage is an easy one, dedicated for sprinters who will be employed for a couple of days after this stage.
Image

Stage 5 : Lucera - Termoli
Another quite flat stage but there is a "little wall" (1,2km at 8,8%) just 4km before the finish line.
Image

Stage 6 : Lanciano - Rieti
The first mountain stage, not ending on a summit but the Terminillo is 16,2km long with an average slope of 7,8% and it will make a selection even if there is 20km before the finishing line in Rieti.
Image

Stage 7 : Spoleto - Foligno
The second ITT is really long and flat most of the time. It is quite early in the race but that's intended in order to make gapes before the mountain stages.
Image

Stage 8 : Perugia - Rifugio di Valsorda
A medium mountain stage without high altitudes but the finishing climb is short but quite hard (looks like the Planche des Belles Filles).
Image

Stage 9 : Gubbio - Chiesanuova
Probably the queen stage of the first week : Over 220km, 9 climbs for a roller coaster stage ending on an "easy" climb in San marino/
Image

Stage 10 : Cesena - Marghera
2018 is the twentieth anniversary Marco Pantani's double win (Giro and Tour in 1998) and this stage start in his city of birth, Cesena before visiting Rimini and Cesenatico. The stage is desperately flat but it follows the coastline during the whole stage and it can be windy ...
Image

Stage 11 : Trevisio - Gorizia
Another stage dedicated to the sprinters, finishing in Gorizia, a city famous for some battle along the Isonzo river during WWI.
Image

Stage 12 : Nova Gorica - San Daniele del Friuli
This stage, which starts in Slovenia, is the first of four hard days. The final is not that difficult but the total height difference is over 4400m. It's the second stage dedicated to WWI with the crossing of Kobarid (Caporetto in italian), another famous battle of WWI.
Image

Stage 13 : Conegliano - Monte Bondone
A long stage, only three climbs but over 60km of climbing and a summit finish at the top of the Monte Bondone.
Image

Stage 14 : Pinzolo - Aprica
A short stage with a wink at Pantani's career with a finish in Aprica where he won a stage in 1994. The Mortirolo is the hardest climb of the day and the riders will climb it by the "Recta Contador" (9,7km with an average slope of 10%).
Image

Stage 15 : Sondrio - Bergamo
A stage that may be good for a breakaway win, the first climb is the longest one but the others are quite steep and we can have a great stage if some contenders want to fight early.
Image

Stage 16 : Cossato - Oropa
Last reference to Pantani's career with an ITT that ends in the Sanctuary of Oropa where he won in 1999. The first 2/3 of the stage are not that difficult but there it hardens in the last 7km (slope between 6 and 8,5 %)
Image

Stage 17 : Casale Monferrato - Genova
A stage that is flat during the first half before a sequence of four climbs in the last 75km. It's the last mountain stage so there may be fireworks, even if it's not the last opportunity to reverse the GC.
Image

Stage 18 : Sestri Levante - Pontedera
We may have a sprint in Pontedera but it smells like a good stage for a breakaway win.
Image

Stage 19 : Firenze - Sienna
Maybe the most dangerous stage of the entire Giro. Other 200km in Toscania and many kilometers on Strade Bianche on this hilly day.
Image

Stage 20 : Grosseto - Roma
Last stage for the sprinteurs who won't miss this opportunity to shine in Roma.
Image

Stage 21 : Roma - Roma
If the GC is a little tightened, this is the ultimate chance to make some moves. The Slopes aren't that difficult but after three weeks of racing, it may be enough to create some differencies. Before finishing in front of the Coliseo, the riders will face one last obstacle : twelve kilometers of cobbles road on the Via Appia Antica (there is two short quite dirty sectors but the overall road seems praticable (if it's too much, we can use some parallel roads without chaning the rest of the stage).

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
