Contest #6 - Giro preparation races (Cat. 3)
A small contest before Giro d'Italia that will focus mainly on Tour de Romandie. Not on the race itself but as preparation for Giro d'Italia.

Tour de Romandie declares bankrupt. You have to draw a new race - of six days, World Tour - that took Tour de Romandie spot - as a preparation race for Giro d'Italia.

Requirements:
- Technical difficulties should be the same of Romandie (not 2018 edition in particular and this does not mean you have to provide exactly the same type of stages in details, for example the CTT)
- You can't draw it in Switzerland
- You can't draw it in Italy, Spain or France - the three Grand Tours country
- You have to focus the race on a region/particular area, limiting transfers
- You can track it where you want but Europe is preferable due to transfers after Liege

Deadline: 26 may 2018, h 23.59

No, it has to be a route of a local zone / region with limited transfer. Think like Catalonya, Pais Vasco, Dauphiné... it has to be a "ball" not a "line".

Six stages. Type and ITT is free to the tracker and it's part of evaluation.

You can, even if Austria it's the very easier choice.

I already trace mine. I will be "The Steinmark Rundfahrt" or Tour of Styrie (region of Graz in Austria). I believe it fits with "stay in a region", right ?

This is the Salzburgerland Rundfahrt and, people who already went there will know, probably the stage race with the friendliest people and most beautiful sights. All stages are 100% set in the Salzburgerland province of Austria. Presentation is in the spoiler, full route here: maps/tours/view/9076
Spoiler!
Stage 1: Salzburg (ITT)

A very short prologue around castle Hohensalzburg and ending at Schloss Mirabell (you know that DoReMi song from the Sound od Music? That's the place).

Image

Stage 2: Salzburg - Strobl

A tour through Northern Salzburgerland, with multiple sights of the numerous lakes. A final goodbye in Salzburg leads past the former F1-track Salzburgring onto a tougher portion of the stage. A sprint is possible in the town of Strobl, but sprinters will have to survive a few climbs. The Ellmaustein could provide a launching pad for an attack and it will be up to the peloton in the next 10km to bring possible escapees back.

Stage 3: Sankt Gilgen - Obertauern

First stage for the climbers who prefer a high tempo uphill. The route shows the eastern part of Salzburgerland. My original idea was to end on the Edelweissspitze on the Grossglocknerstrasse, but the possibility of a snowy road would be way too high for late april/early may.

Image

Image

Stage 4: Sankt Michael im Lungau - Mittersill

A stage for the specialists of the medium mountains who like a sprint with a small peloton. Sprinters won't survive the Wasserfallblick, but may anticipate on that. This stage shows the southern part of Salzburgerland.

Image

Image

Stage 5: Kaprun - Loferer Alm

A shorter stage, but ending with a bang. The first climb of the Filzenstaffel will be relatively easy, but with less than 60km to go, adventurous teams or riders may make a move on the Dientner Sattel near the Hochkönig. After the second time on the Filzenstaffel, the route continues to go downhill until Lofer. And then... The Loferer Alm, an All-Black climb for the riders who love steep climbs. All for themselves here, percentages rarely go under 10% and often reach 15% and even 17%. The route explores the middle and "other" northern side of Salzburgerland.

Stage 6: Zell am See (ITT)

A short flat ITT around the Zellersee. The wind will be the key factor here in deciding the standings.

Hello everybody, this year 2018 has a real change for cycling: Tour de Romandie is becoming Volta do Beira maps/tours/view/9089

- Where is Beira ?

Beira is a region in middle of Portugal. This region is beautiful with plenty of small towns more charming than each other. There are also very high mountains, and also the climax of metropolitan Portugal, Serra de Estrela (1993 m).

The organization is really confident about the future of this race, which has all to live.

Prologue Castelo Branco > Castelo Branco (ITT - 4,72 km)

Image

The prologue of this Volta do Beira is passing through the streets of Castelo Branco, a city in the south of Beira. This prologue is ending on the hill of Castelo è Muralhas, the castle of Castelo Branco. A good finisher like Valverde, Alaphilippe or Wellens should take the victory.

Stage 1 : Castelo Branco > Coimbra (Medium Mountain - 167,51 km)

Image

The first stage of this Volta do Beira is crossing the chain of mountains Serra da Estrela (do not mix up with Serra de Estrela, climax of metropolitan Portugal). This stage is again for a puncher or good downhill rider.

Stage 2 : Coimbra > Aguiar da Beira (Hilly - 202,99 km)

Image

This stage can be very hard, because of his hard pents, especially the climb of Trancoso - in the last 25 km - with 1,6 km at 9,5 % average). This stage might be (yes, again) for a puncher or a bold.

Stage 3 : Viseu > Miradouro do Fragão do Corvo (High Mountain - 175,96 km)

Image

To be honest, this stage is not really hard. The final climb is not insumountable, with its poor 4% average, there won't be crazy gaps on top. The riders still have to be careful, this climb is long of 26 km.

Stage 4 : Vale Formoso > Serra de Estrela (High Mountain - 200,24 km)

Image

This is the queen stage of this Volta do Beira. 5000 m of positive height difference. Last climb: 26,0 km , 5,6% average , HC. This will be definitely a great stage.

Stage 5 : Guarda > Castelo Branco (Plain - 177,48)

Image

This is the end of this Volta do Beira (yes, already !!). The rider who has the leader jersey today can enjoy his victory.

Hope you enjoyed it!! Good luck

They're Spanish, so I don't think they're allowed
